This is now year 5 of the College Place High School kids coming to glean at the farm for BMAC.

Some that came as freshman, are now seniors. I guess you could say I have kinda gotten to know them during this annual visit. I hope I have encouraged them just a tad to work hard, treat others as you would want to be treated and know that character is formed in the persistent doing of the mundane things of life.

What I do know is that when someone is called out by name to do something tangible and manageable ( like gleaning ) they exceed their own expectations and leave feeling accomplished and like they made a difference.
The kids picked cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, big tomatoes and flowers. They than took the flowers and made arrangements to gift to people they felt needed to smile.
I told them that someday, maybe 10 years down the road they will remember this service day and while the food they harvested today feeds others, this experience will feed them when they need it most.

Let us all stop having so many meetings and strategy sessions of how we can touch lives. Lets us just meet together for the good of others and talk as we serve.

Alright you guys!
If any of you are passing through Cle Elum you must stop at my friends shop.
Ok, she sells ice cream , great coffee and the cutest gifts and pickled products.
However, it’s Hilary herself that is so fun to visit with and be around. Just one of those truly down to earth, listen to each word you say kind of person.
We have been around each other other only 3 times but we feel like sisters of a lifetime.
A special breed us women farm entrepreneurs. Few get us and few marry men who are happy to be along for the idea packed life.
Don’t let this farm girl fool you though. She might wear jeans and boots most of the time but she is in Olympia and Washington DC making dust and affecting policies at many levels for us small farmers.
I love being on panels with her and seeing her articulate her passion & power.
