Romero Family Legacy
The Romero Produce story is a remarkable account of a family business that has spanned over five generations and 100 years, beginning in Port Arthur, Texas.
The Founding Generation
The business was established in 1925 by Eugene Romero Sr. of Port Arthur. Despite also working for the Texas Oil Company as an engineer, Eugene Sr. was involved in the produce industry, notably by shipping produce via railway and later by founding Romero's Trucking Company upon his retirement, purchasing ten 2-ton trucks. This trucking operation was vital for hauling fresh produce from Louisiana and various parts of Texas to the Farmers Market in Houston.
Second and Third Generations: Expand beyond
Eugene Sr.'s large family, which included eight children, ensured the continuity of the business. Four of his sons—Travis, Alvis (Babe), Eugene Joseph (T-Boy), and Ray—dedicated their lives to the produce industry, and some of their children also participated, making them the third generation.
* Travis Romero and wife Rena’s buisiness continued through his son Rodney Romero and wife Donice. They managed markets in Groves and Port Arthur for over 50 years.
* Alvis (Babe) Romero and his wife Annix expanded their markets from Port Arthur to Houston. Their son, Ronald Romero Sr., continued the legacy for over 50 years, opening markets from Arcola to Winnie, including Fruit Land USA, one of the largest roadside produce markets in Texas. Later moving to Baytown, Texas as Bay Area Farmers Market. Babe's daughters, Carolyn Romero Shinn, Rose Romero Gaspard, and Gina Romero Clenney, also supported or carried on the business.
* Eugene (T-Boy) Romero and his wife Rebecca operated markets for 44 years in Texas and Louisiana, passing the torch to their daughter, Deborah Romero Baty, who with her husband Nonnie opened a successful market in Arcola, Texas in 1974 that is still operating today.
* Ray Romero and his wife Betty owned and operated their market in Sulphur, Louisiana, for over 45 years passing the business to their son Michael Romero.
The Fourth and Fifth Generations
The fourth generation of Romeros, primarily Ronald Romero Sr. and wife Dolores’s children—Raymond, Russell, Rhonda, Rachel and Ronald II,—are still actively running roadside produce markets today. The lineage continues with the fifth generation, proving the family's enduring commitment to providing top-quality, farm-fresh produce to South Texas, carrying on a fulfilling but demanding legacy.
