Never had ice hang around this long here in central NC. Lambs on the ground in less than a month. Hoping for a warm up!

Snow doesn’t melt on their backs—-because wool is insulating and keeps their heat in. That’s why you should also wear wool in the winter!

They have constant access to a warm dry barn but thought a snow day would be fun. We got 8” but it’s the cold that’s making it hard. All of 2026 has been hard so far.
So in case you, like me, could use some good news, let me tell you: Big Frank did his job and Bella is in calf. Due sometime late April-late June. Most likely will deliver right when Hannah graduates from vet school so I’ll be stressed the entire time. Thanks to the Mitchell’s for letting her go visit Big Frank and everyone along the way who has helped me. ❤️

It’s National Milk Day so here’s a shout out to Katarina! Kat raises a good calf, provides milk for all my cheese-making dreams, and gets me out of bed every day. ❤️

Milking also strengthens and stretches my back (sit on a bucket and hold your arms out in front of you for 15 minutes) and more importantly starts my day with a sense of calm that is better than yoga.

After threats from management that if they weren’t going to do their job, they’d be replaced with better looking peafowl scabs, the hens ended their monthlong strike and delivered two eggs. 😊

Nelly, Nala and Naomi want to warn you not to fall for the nonsense in the next to last picture. These lovely lambs need to be shorn once a year. It’s like getting haircut, they do not end up in pain or bloody. They occasionally get a small nick, like might happen to a person when shaving. That’s it—-and they will appreciate getting that wool off when the days start to warm up.

Do they have complaints about other stuff? Absolutely. They think the older ewes can be bullies, the llama takes his guard duties too seriously and they would like to trade the old shepherdess for the kids that gave them treats for being good when practicing for shows. But they will not miss their wool at all when shearing arrives and are happy to trade it for the sweet life they have here.

Sustainably raised sheep live a good life and produce a fiber much better for the environment than synthetics.
