The Journey of an Egg
Ovulation: A mature yolk is released from the hen's o***y.
Infundibulum: The yolk enters the oviduct and is caught by the infundibulum, a funnel-shaped part. (If a rooster is present, fertilization can happen here).
Magnum: The yolk moves to the magnum, where the thick egg white (albumen) is added around it.
Isthmus: In the isthmus, the inner and outer shell membranes form around the albumen.
Uterus (Shell Gland): The egg spends the most time (around 20 hours) in the uterus, where the hard shell is deposited, giving it its color and spots (if any).
Laying: The finished egg passes through the vent and is laid, usually with the pointy end facing down as it turns just before exiting.
