Husband-and-wife team, Trey and Corrine Wright, focus on regenerating forest land to support a growing cattle herd. Unlike conventional farms, we use no-till planting to grow a variety of forages for the cattle while increasing soil health to eliminate the need for fertilizer. The cattle move to new pastures every 3-4 days, allowing the grasses to recover and regrow while breaking parasite lifecyc

le and eliminating the need for pesticides. Our goal is to provide beef to the Lowcountry community while caring for the environment.

We missed them so much over at Cordray's, we had to bring a deer!

Cordray’s is our favorite beef butcher and they always take care of us! But when they shut for deer season, we usually don’t see them for months at a time!

Trey’s been out hunting lately and when he got this buck, he asked me to tag along to Cordray’s to visit while we dropped the deer off. Wasn’t much time- they were slammed!

I’m a little nervous to eat deer meat, as my one experience eating it I didn’t like it. But we got some flavored sausages, ground, and deboned ham to make jerky with! Hopefully with the right recipes, it will become a household staple!

Cordray’s Taxidermy has also done a fantastic job with our cow hides and skulls so of course we got this big boy mounted!

Rotational grazing at its finest.

We got busy for a couple days and the cows grazed lower than we normally do. But farming needs to work with our schedule- not against it. Just like we believe our practices should work with nature- Silvopasture, no-till planting and maintaining living roots, and no herbicide or fertilizer.

Regrowth may be stunted on that 1-acre paddock after such an intense grazing. But we’ll monitor it and skip it on our next rotation through if it hasn’t recovered.

We love using sacrifice lots!!

Every spring and every fall, while waiting for the warm/cool season forages to grow, we designate a sacrifice lot. We choose this area based on weed/shrub/sapling pressure and quality of existing forage. In this case, our “south pasture” met the criteria following our thinning last fall. There were a bunch of saplings that needed knocked over and soil exposed to sunlight for the first time in many years. We fed hay into the thickest areas of brush for about a month and a half while the rest of the farm grew.

Since being back from our trip out west, we’ve moved the cattle to our perennial pasture and started our daily moves through the warm season forages. In south pasture, we’ve seeded and spread compost. We won’t turn back into south pasture until likely late September.

Our other pastures are thriving and waiting to be grazed- sun h**p, r**e, sorghum Sudan, cowpeas, millet, crabgrass, and lespedeza.

Do you use a sacrifice lot??

Some picture of branding! Bobbie rode to gather cattle the first day and Riley hitched a ride with Poppa on the four wheeler to gather cattle the second day! The first day the Gomes’ boys got a crash refresher on wrestling calves while the ropers made due with fewer guys roping. The second day we consistently had three calves on the ground and we were able to double our speed with seven ropers and an in- sync ground crew! Such a great weekend!!

Spent a few days on the desert of Oregon branding cattle!

Trey’s a fourth generation cowboy and for the past eight or so years, we’ve aligned our visit to see family with their branding! We love helping out, working together, and getting back to family roots.

Early in the morning, the cowboys gather the cattle off the permit and drive them to the branding pen to meet the ground crew. The cowboys rope the calves by their heads and heels and hold the calves so the ground crew can safely brand, earmark, vaccinate, and castrate the calves. It surely takes a team- and two days to get it all done!

Great morning picking blackberries out at farm!!

We narrowly missed picking last week (they sold out in 31 minutes!!!) but today they had more ripe berries and expect to have many days of blackberry picking ahead!!

Soon, they’ll have blueberries! It was so tempting to see some blue ones but not be able to pick them 😂

I loved chatting with Mr. Lee and we look forward to coming back for blueberries in a couple weeks!!!
