Oh, heeyyy big guy!

This is one of the first Silkies we hatched from our own birds with intention to retain. He is young and still growing, but so far we are super excited about him.

BOTH of our older Silkie boys will be looking for new homes in the next few months as we transition to using only mottled cockerels. They are both black split to mottled. They need tiny attitude adjustments occasionally, but are overall good boys and treat their ladies well. ;)

Sister wives?! 🤣

The broody problem is SOLVED in the Silkie/Satin pen, thank goodness. I gave the SIX (one not pictured) broody gals some unclaimed chicks a week or so ago. That worked VERY well. They all claimed them, they all mother them, and they are ALL up and moving during the day!! This picture was taken once they nested down for the evening.

Scooorreeeee!

This is important because it is unhealthy for a hen to remain broody for extended periods of time. They become so dedicated to the cause, they eat and drink less, if at all. They become sedentary and in the "zone", all for nothing if they aren't sitting on eggs. I have no desire for the ladies to hatch eggs...the incubator hatches enough. 🤣 I have given broody hens chicks in years past, but NEVER six broody hens at once. Thankfully, it was a success!

💥THE GAME IS OVER. I WILL ANNOUNCE THE LUCKY PERSON LATER TODAY!💥

Let's play a GAME for Mother's Day!

After downsizing for Summer, I finally counted our ADULT chickens. How many do YOU think we have?

Hint: Keep in mind we *have* downsized a bit...it isn't an OUTRAGEOUS number. ;)

Whoever has the closest guess will receive a PASTURE PICKS hatching egg assortment for FREE! Try not to repeat guesses, please.

Shipping is on me, too! I ONLY SHIP IN SC!

Ends Monday May 11th at 8 AM!

Help meeeee!

Y'all.

As some of you know, I invested in a GQF stacked brooder AND cabinet incubator this year.

They were LIFE CHANGING.

Buuttt. I have the brooder on my back porch and y'all. May weather + the lowcountry of SC is NOT conducive to having chickens on your back porch.

I GOTTA GET THESE EXTRA CHICKS OUTTA HERE! 🤣
...AND FAST!

All are between 2 and 4 weeks old...ish.

They are available in mixed sets. I'll pick a random assortment. They are 💲3️⃣0️⃣ for 6 chicks.

Most are black or blue.

YOU WILL END UP WITH SOME ROOSTERS *BUT* I constantly pick obvious roosters out, so statistically you should end up with MORE girls than boys.

There are various breeds. You will get LOTS of dark, reddish brown eggs, olive eggs, and maybe some speckles in the future.

If you'd like guaranteed breeds, they are 💲1️⃣5️⃣ per chick. Black Copper Marans, Olive Eggers, & Cream Legbars are what I have available.

That "hair" tho...

This MOTTLED SATIN COCKEREL is still looking for his own ladies to woo.

He is from Rose Blossom Silkies in Washington state.

WOO HOO! 🎉

More summer plans...

We will not label eggs through the summer!

What this means for YOU guys...

I will not have last minute or extra breed-specific hatching eggs available. I will accept breed-secific preorders if you'd like something. Otherwise, the only extra hatching eggs available through summer will be PASTURE PICKS! These are unlabeled assortments of various colors *I* choose. No requests accepted for Pasture Pick colors!

Side note, check out these 2 Welsummer eggs. Gah, I cannot wait to work on more speckling for the future. They are so pretty! 🤩

Fridays are for.....planning?

Sure, why not!

It is time to really hone in on what we want to see in the future here at Crosby Lake Farm.

Our goal for the future generations of Olive Eggers is more speckling. We invested in 2 lines of Welsummers recently, unfortunately shipping was unkind with both AND neither had great hatch rates. Fingers crossed we have a usable rooster, because ideally, ALL of our Olive Eggers will be placed under a Welsummer as soon as we have one of age.

Our plans for Cream Legbars (which we have discussed prior) are homozygous blue testing of ladies and moving slightly more toward weeding out birds that may not check all the boxes, SOP wise.

We truly adore our Black Copper Marans, but the intentions here are two fold. We would like to grow our breeding flock, numbers wise. We would also like to add more heavy blooms. We have loottsss of growouts currently, so we are well on our way to accomplishing these.

Annndddd lastly, Avery's precious Silkies and Satins. There are multiple layers of goals here! We intend to move to multiple breeding pens AND move to all mottled cockerels. Currently, we are using two splits (which means they are visibly black but carry the mottled gene). We will end up with so many more mottled chicks by swapping our breeding cockerels up. In addition, we hope to be able to create a sexlinked pen, which will allow us to create sexable chicks at hatch! Once AALLLLL that is accomplished, we will work toward weeding out our less than correct birds. Fortunately, we started with reasonably nice birds, so this shouldn't be too hard!

Staayyy tuned!!

To the dogs they go!

I cracked a handful of eggs this evening for a quick fertility check. You cannot tell by this photo, but every egg was indeed fertilized.

Unfortunately, I cracked them outside in the barn with filthy hands, so the guardian dogs got a real treat. They get eggs on a regular basis, but PRECRACKED and poured into a bucket is a rarity.

We have CHICKS HATCHING as we speak. This is the LAST available chicks until later. We will be taking a much needed hatching break for a bit.

We will have at least one set of assorted standard breed chicks available and at least one set of Silkie/Satin chicks available. STRAIGHT RUN ONLY. These chicks must be picked up as soon as they are ready, which will most likely be tomorrow.

The assorted breeds will be any combination of Olive Eggers, Cream Legbars, or Black Copper Marans.

⛔️💲4️⃣0️⃣ per set of 5⛔️

In addition, we MAY have some BCM hatching from purples. I am not retaining ANY from this hatch so they will be looking for new incubators. They are 💲2️⃣0️⃣ each and are straight run. No guarantee on future purple eggs, but the possibility is absolutely there.

🐣BACKCROSSED OLIVE EGGER GROWOUTS AVAILABLE AS A TRIO/QUAD🐣

one cockerel FREE WITH ALL THE LADIES

at least two pullets, likely three 2️⃣5️⃣ each

Some pullets are BLACK though I only took pictures of BLUE ones because I have so many Black Copper Marans in this pen I don't know who is who until they have been caught and I look at their bands. I'm not catching until pickup 😂
