Tromboncino!

My first season growing this interesting squash! Pick it early while green, it’s like a zucchini. Harvest later after it turns golden, it’s more of a winter squash. Needless to say, you need strong supports, but the tradeoff is its resistance to squash vine borer.

Morning walk . . .

Just yesterday we were thinking about all the wildlife that live along the way we walk each day - deer, turkeys, rabbits, so many kinds of birds and insects, lizards, snakes, worms - all there because we created the first conservancy in the county right here. But this little crayfish was not on our mind (or on our list). Walking this morning, we found him inching along the road, facing the right way to get to the creek, but about a day’s walk away. Terry scooped him up and helped him along . . .

I read about Scarlet Runner Beans and now I’m obsessed. I had a bag of Steve Sando and the Rancho Gordo staff beans in the pantry, so I took a few and soaked them overnight like Alexis Pare: Grow & Cook Your Own Food suggested. Now I’ve got these beautiful flowering vines everywhere and hopefully dried beans to keep for winter eating (and planting again next year).

My dill reseeded itself like crazy this year. Besides seemingly keeping the tomato hornworms at bay (the reason I’ve always planted it amongst the tomatoes), it makes the nicest filler plant in a vase of zinnias.
