Guarding dad while he breaks ground for the new garden. Our garden failed this year due to wild rabbits and our silly egg layers. After much consideration we decided to move our garden to the front of our house. Part of homesteading is learning and adjusting. In the past we have not had issues with our own chickens destroying our garden but for some reason this year 80 seedlings were ripped up in less than a week. After some tears, stalking the garden and chasing chickens I had to admit defeat. I shifted focus to other areas of the homestead.

Fall is for food preserving! With temperatures dropping it makes canning so much nicer. These are the amazing blackberries that the kids picked late summer and stored in the freezer until I had some time to process. These jams are amazing and we even made some for Christmas Gifts.

Saturday was our last day of butchery for 2023 of our pasture raised poultry. We spend days fully processing the chickens, from parting them up and using the carcasses to make amazing bone broth.

Our relationship with this goat ended the way it started, laying in a stall with her. First, it was triplets with a still born kid that I had to revive and hold up to mom’s utter to feed. In the end, it was polio that she couldn’t recover from. Amanda Allen and I were up all night with her rotating in warm blankets to keep her comfortable. This morning, Chex crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully while we held her. She was a wonderful goat and a painful loss on our farm. We give them the best life we can, but in the end, if you raise livestock, you have to deal with the pain of deadstock.

Today we had to say goodbye to our beautiful buck Tobin. We tried everything we could to keep him alive, but he succumbed to congestive heart failure. He was a joy to have on our farm for a short time and he will continue on in the two does and one buck that he sired for us.

Update on the Chicken Tractors. The meat bird tractors have successfully finished the first batch of the year birds. The second batch is out with our trial run of Cornish Cross. We normally only run freedom rangers but with concerns over the market/ potential shortages we decided to try running a couple so we knew how they would handle the tractor/free range. We are impressed with the results so far. None of the birds are having issues with walking or their joints.
