I get questions daily about which books or manuals are a must have for Poultry and livestock keepers. Here you go- this is my favorite and my “go to” . Please don’t “Dr. Google” or trust the random advice you get on social media from Lord knows who… use a trusted, reputable source for your research.
Yes, you should have a trusted medical professional for your fury and feathered loved ones. I am honored if I’m your choice, but if I’m not available or you have general questions or simply want to learn MORE, this is where I would direct you! The Merck Veterinary Manual has been a trusted source of animal health information for students and practicing veterinarians. It contains authoritative guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of animal disorders and diseases.

Hello Friends!!!!
I’ve been getting loads of questions regarding very similar issues. I have decided to create a post to answer for the masses, rather than individually have to contact each and every client with a question. Please follow Bagenbrook Farm Nurse to stay abreast of the latest news, updates, learning tools and answers to questions.

Elector PSP usage (mind you, these answers were obtained from discussions with board certified DVMs) and colleagues.

‼️In an uncontrolled environment, Elector PSP lasts on a properly sprayed chicken for 5-7 days. ‼️This means for birds kept in a non sterile structure (what coop is sterile?!) 😣😣😣😣- with access to the outside and other chickens.

There is NO benefit to applying Elector PSP at night as opposed to the day. As long as the skin is SOAKED.

Bugs will die for 🆙 ⬆️ TO 7 days after application, again in an uncontrolled environment. ‼️‼️Reapplication after 7 days is safe, after 14 days it's recommended.‼️‼️

Elector PSP was‼️ NOT tested as a dip so the company cannot legally recommend dipping or dosage in that application‼️ Only fine mist spray was tested. *Emphasis on this point *

Elector PSP CAN be safely applied to healthy chicks. There is no age minimum. - HOWEVER…… lol, chicks do not need and will potentially see negative side effects from too much of the product. It’s strongly recommended that you use a dropper or syringe to apply in crucial areas, as you would ivermectin. Under wings, nape of neck, top of wings (or the football pads- as I call them) - and additional drop beneath the vent.

Unopened and properly stored, the shelf life of the product is up to 5 years. Properly stored, opened container will last approx 3 years. ‼️‼️The product must be shaken very well if left unused for a long period of time.‼️‼️

Ok friends! Follow up to my last post. If you didn’t see it, please scroll down.
Here’s our SAME patient again- White Leghorn Hen (Gwenevere) - about 2 years old. In the last post (roughly 1 week ago) we were dealing with a copious worm load… Today, we have THIS situation.
Without researching…. (NO GOOGLE) lol 😂 Which by the way is NOT the rabbit hole I wish to see any of you going down for medical advice…
Let’s chat a bit about what we think may be going on here…
I want to hear from as many of you as possible.. There are no wrong answers, this is an open forum, place to learn, share and grow. No judgement. I know what’s going on with Gwen, after putting all the pieces together… but I want you to go back and read the first post, then think about the time that has passed… consider her breed and age- GWEN IS also a hatchery born hen- she HAS been a prolific layer, and has laid eggs since being in the hospital.

DEWORM YOUR BIRDS on a REGULAR Schedule!

This is exactly why I advocate Deworming each Spring and Fall.
Additionally- deworm as needed.

Folks- Herbs and foods DO NOT “Deworm” your feathered friends!
Certain items help to deter a vicious worm load… However, ALL birds get worms. Unless you use a “treatment” to take a proactive approach or a Reactive approach to rid the worms, you are in danger of losing your bird (s).
These adult cecal worms have likely been inside this seemingly healthy bird for quite some time. Using the comb and her weight as gauges for health, you wouldn’t know there was anything wrong with this hen. Her feather quality is also amazing… along with a healthy appetite and normal thirst/water consumption.
This hen stopped walking, thus prompting me to bring her inside, bathe her and give her a full check up.
I started to supplement her eating by adding a daily tube feed containing vitamins I was concerned she was missing. One week after being inside, she passed this very heavy worm load, along with copious amounts of GI lining, blood and diarrhea.
She has now been dewormed- (Fenbendazole) dose number 1, with dose number 2 to follow in 10 days.
