Five things I would tell a state/county fair exhibitor…
from the keyboard of a retired show kid
1. Embrace failure: Things won’t always go as planned in the ring. Things don’t always go as planned in real life. If you can learn how to fail & grow in this environment, it will be a lot easier to pivot and go after your goals in the future.
2. Dedication will pay off: Consistency will turn an average project into an excellent one. Don’t be the person that makes money the excuse to your lack of success. Go out and outwork & outlearn everyone. You’ll find the right connections faster that way than writing any big check.
3. Teamwork only amplifies: You’ve heard the quote - Talent wins games. Teamwork wins championships. The faster you learn that, the quicker you rise.
4. The show ring is a lifelong teacher: You’re never too old to learn a lesson, or too young to compete. If you’re striving to perform your best, the outcome will always be a win. Continual improvement is key.
5. Sportsmanship defines you: How you treat your fellow showmen, competitors, breeders and support system reflects your character. A showman that demonstrates respect & humility will be remembered far longer than anything at the other end of the halter.
