Here at Wingshadows we strive for self sufficiency by implementing organic farming practices in everything we do. This is a rewarding way of life....

We use no pesticides or artificial fertilizers. Our chickens range the entire 5 + acres daily, taking advantage of natural forage & bugs. We milk every morning by hand & use the milk to make creamy Chev're & yummy Feta. Our well is powered by Solar as is the entire property during daylight hours. We have used the existing adobe clay to make our own bricks. From that, we have constructed the wal

l surrounding the Hacienda. Summers are spent canning to preserve the abundance of produce & fruits. Winters are useful for preparing the ground & irrigation for the Spring planting.

New babies born at the Hacienda this weekend. Tootsie gave us twins. A sweet little black & white boy & a lovely brown & white girl.

We may be retired, but not from the kitchen~! Even in these temps, the show must go on.

This year we planted a new Heirloom Tomato called "Big Brandy". It is a cross between a Bandywine & Big Dwarf. Awesome fruit (some 4-5 inches across), wonderful flavor, huge yield, virus resistant & ripens earlier than most Heirlooms.

I have been busy canning our bonanza of succulent tomatoes. Crushed Tomatoes, Salsa with Chipotle & Salsa with Jalapeno. Because of the heat in the kitchen, I opted to can using the side burner on my Barbecue. I'm happy to say it works perfectly.

Solar update......
The lower portion of our 5 1/2 acres is now totally run by solar. We are now working on the upper portion which includes the house. We hope to have that finished by next month. Then no more "power outages" unless we personally create them~! :)

Miracle Babies ~! We hatched 9 Mille Fleur Cochin babies this past weekend. They were the "survivors" of 3 power outages. Never underestimate the power of survival. My little dinosaur chickens. :)

Happy New Year~! Looks like 2018 will be the year of the Solar at Wingshadows. December with her warm temps, gave us the opportunity to to work on the solar installation.

Bruce & I were able to set up the first 10 panels on the ground. We then lifted 20 panels to the roof of the Battery House.The remaining 10 panels are set for the ground installation. We will then start the connection process.

The 20 panels on the roof will run the lower part of our property & the 20 panels on the ground will run the upper area.

Here are some progress pics. Not too bad for two 70+ year old's. :)

UPDATE ON OUR "OFF GRID" SOLAR PROJECT~!

"Houston", the batteries have landed~!!!!!!!!!!!! Finished the cement pad last week. Moved the batteries in this morning. Everything is coming along, although slow. But it will be worth it in the end. :)
