"O Suzy Q, O Suzy Q, O Suzy Q baby I love you, Suzy Q"

Now lets meet our Suzy Q! She is a 7 year old Jersey cow sired by Chrome and was recently scored EX94! She is a sweetheart of a cow! Suzy Q is very easy going, loves her grain and often is a comedienne trying to get up in the manger to eat grain leftover from her herdmates! She is a granddaughter of our "queen" Po Folks Valentino Sandy EX95 !

Perspective- our Somatic cell levels are usually around 30,000... amongst the lowest of any farm in the nation and a far cry from the 750,000 legal limit for milk that is to be pasteurized! Milk in other countries have legal limits of 400,000. The USA should be held to this quality standard as well- but they refuse - and that limits our export market, thereby limiting demand and affects milk price .
Milk is a food source that dairy farmers "harvest" to feed people. Holding ourselves to exemplary standards is how your produce a safe product for consumption. Whether you drink it raw or pasteurized, we know that we wouldn't want to consume milk that started at a 750,000 Somatic cell!

🥛 LEGAL DOESN’T MEAN ACCEPTABLE: The Milk Standards Your Dairy Actually Has to Meet

Here’s something a lot of people outside commercial dairy may not realize:

The legal limit is not necessarily the standard your milk buyer expects you to meet.

Take somatic cell count (SCC).

In the United States, the Grade “A” regulatory limit for SCC in cow milk is generally 750,000 cells/mL.

That sounds pretty generous, doesn’t it?

Except many commercial dairies would be in serious trouble with their milk buyer LONG before they were comfortable routinely shipping milk anywhere near that number.

Processors and cooperatives can—and often do—set their own quality requirements and premium programs substantially below the federal limit. Standards around 400,000 SCC or lower are common territory in commercial milk-quality programs, putting expectations much closer to the stricter standards associated with markets such as the European Union.

And good dairies frequently aim considerably lower than that.

Why?

Because SCC isn't just a number on a milk check.

It is one of our most important herd-level indicators of udder health and milk quality. A rising bulk-tank SCC tells me I need to start asking questions.

Which cows are contributing?

Do I have new mastitis infections?

Do I have a contagious pathogen moving through the herd?

Is there a milking-procedure problem?

Is equipment functioning correctly?

Do I need to culture cows?

The regulatory limit is the ceiling.

It isn't the goal.

And SCC isn't the only place where this happens.

Commercial dairies operate under government regulation, but we also answer to our milk buyers. Milk is routinely tested. Drug residues matter. Bacterial counts matter. Cooling matters. Sanitation matters. Milk quality matters.

A load can be rejected.

A producer can lose money.

And serious or repeated quality problems can jeopardize the ability to sell milk at all.

I know some of my family-cow followers aren't particularly fond of agricultural regulation. 😂

But I'm going to say something that might surprise you:

I believe dairy SHOULD have oversight.

We're producing food.

People put what we produce on their tables and feed it to their children.

That carries responsibility.

Can regulation become excessive, poorly designed, outdated or downright maddening?

Absolutely.

Ask a commercial dairy farmer. We can probably give you examples until tomorrow morning. 😂

But believing that regulation can be improved is very different from believing there should be no oversight at all.

There should be.

Because when you sell food to another human being, their safety becomes part of your responsibility.

And one thing I wish more consumers understood about commercial dairy is this:

“Legal” is often only the beginning of the standard we're expected to meet.

Meet another herd favorite! She is Po- Folks Crush Flirtatious EX90 but affectionately known as "Flirt." Flirt is currently the oldest Holstein cow in our herd- she is 7 years old.
Flirt is sired by Maverick Crush and she is out of Oakfield Byway Fantasy-ET EX92 2E which makes her a great grand-daughter of the one and only Harvue Roy Frosty EX97- the previous Supreme champion of the World Dairy Expo
