Dear friends and followers, as we move on to new and different adventures, this account will be changing to one primarily about our family and our life here in Maine, while all things Spear Spring Farm will stay anchored to the account under the new stewards: Kirsten and Bruce. Refollow to stay up-to-date on all their new offerings in a week or two. Stay right here if you want to continue hearing about our family, our farming and food adventures, and life in the beautiful MidCoast of Maine! With love and gratitude for all your support and for following along with us, thank you! You've made the last 8 years at SSF a literal dream come true for our family. 💚

When you get home late, your kiddo is sick, and everyone is starving, it is acceptable to pull out a box of frozen pie crust to create your venison pot pie with garden veggies and wild mushrooms. Just so long as you put a cute reindeer on the front, no one will ever know! Unless you tell them. No one will ever know unless you tell them.

As these golden days of Autumn come to an end, we get ready to put the farm to bed for the last time. Only two more weeks left in our season! Come say farewell and stock up for the cold days ahead. While the veggies are winding down, there's still plenty of local goodness in the farm stand - grass fed meat, local artisan cheese, the last of the craft beer and wine, and lots of great gifts perfect for stocking stuffers or your Thanksgiving table. Farm Stand closes November 17th!

This is Chippy. He visits me multiple times per day when I'm working in the farm stand, as he travels to and fro on his errands. Today Chippy is working hard to prepare for the long winter ahead, storing his cache of nuts and seeds in one of his many hidey holes and lining his nest with soft dry leaves, chicken feathers (it's almost as if molting season is timed just for him) and bits of grass and moss. Chippy and I have an understanding, and I appreciate his respect. He doesn't eat any snacks that are not specifically left for him, and in return, i share the harvest. Sometimes, I leave him little piles of acorns I've collected on my walks on one of his little table spaces. He has the air of a distinguished English gentleman, as he delicately nibbles the snacks I've left him... a pine cone and a handful of acorns. He dispatches the pine nuts quickly. They won't keep through the winter... but the acorns he stuffs into his cheeks and quickly disappears, mumbling a muffled apology in his high society accent as his tail flicks and he is gone.

One day, I will forget just how amazing my view was each day as I worked in these fields and how lucky I am to have had the chance to steward this land.

Apparently, birds are a theme here on the farm right now. A daring rescue from the confines of one of our chimneys was made. We snapped this picture, and Bob was released to fly happily back to his flock, waiting in the large Ash tree in front of the farmhouse. They had hung out there all day. It's like they knew he was missing and were just waiting for him to return... Once he rejoined them, the flock took off in their signature sursurrah across the fields. I'm sure Bob had many stories to tell about his harrowing adventure and the hand that grabbed him out of the darkness and returned him to the light.

A majestic sight on the farm. These two adult eagles and their babies hung out with us for a while, as we were working in the field. Listening to their calls, watching them preen, and keep watch as their teenagers practiced their acrobatics... It gave me such joy to know this is a conservation success story. When I was a kid, I could count the number of eagles I saw on one hand. Now, I see them on the daily, both around the farm and just driving around Maine. We have to take the little wins these days and watching these guys gives me hope.
