📸 Step Back in Time with a Civil War-Era Photograph!

Ever wondered what it would be like to have your portrait taken the way people did during the Civil War? Join us at our Bristol Civil War Monument Rededication & History Event on October 17 for a special opportunity to have a tintype portrait created by photographer Ashley Kouri!

Tintypes use the historic wet plate collodion process, developed in the 1850s. Each portrait is handcrafted using light-sensitive chemicals and a metal plate to create a truly one-of-a-kind photograph. The process takes about 10–15 minutes per image, making it a fascinating glimpse into the art and science of 19th-century photography.

Here’s what to know:
📷 5×7-inch tintype portraits: $110
⏳ Each portrait takes approximately 10–15 minutes to create.
📬 We take finished portraits home to varnish and scan them, then mail them to you, or you can pick them up at an agreed-upon location.

Whether you're attending in period dress or simply want a unique keepsake, this is a chance to experience a photographic tradition that dates back to the Civil War era!

Join TCHS and Warren-Trumbull County Public Library System on November 12 at 6pm for the inaugural event of the McFarland Speaker Series featuring Rev. Harold Good. His life's work has taken him from Northern Ireland through Warren, Ohio, to the front lines of peacebuilding and reconciliation.

A special VIP Luncheon will take place at West & Main in Warren at 11:30am. Tickets include an Irish entrée, appetizer/salad, and (1) alcoholic beverage. A moderated talk with Rev. Harold Good will occur during the luncheon.

✨Meet our Sutliff Museum Intern✨

Hello! My name is Kristie, and I am the Sutliff Museum intern at TCHS. I am a current graduate student at Kent State University and am enrolled in their Master of Library and Information Science program with an expected graduation date of December 2026. I graduated from the University of Akron in 2021 with a bachelor’s in history and a certificate in museum and archival studies. Currently, I am conducting research into the rich history of abolition in Trumbull County to help prepare for the design and installation of the Sutliff Museum in its new home at the Morgan History Center. I am looking forward to gaining more hands-on experience with research, collections, and exhibit design while in this role, and I’m excited to learn more about the Sutliff collection at the historical society as well as the broader history of Trumbull County along the way!

✨Meet our Martha Ellers Intern✨

Hello, my name is Samantha Sloan and I am from Kinsman, Ohio. I am a recent graduate of Youngstown State University with a Bachelor of Science in Art Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. In August, I started as the Martha Ellers Intern at TCHS. So far, I have helped with transcriptions and designing flyers for events. Currently, I am working on documenting artifacts such as images and letters to be added to the organization's online archive. This weekend, I attended the Ohio Local History Alliance Annual Meeting with the TCHS through the J.D. Britton Scholarship. From participating in this internship, I hope to learn more about museum work and what goes on behind-the-scenes, such as how artifacts are conserved and cataloged and how exhibitions are curated. I am also interested in gaining more experience with public outreach like event planning and content creation.

This weekend was the annual Ohio Local History Alliance conference in Columbus! Our Collections and Research Manager, Savannah Moss, attended along with our current Martha Ellers Intern Samantha Sloan (right). While there, they ran into some familiar faces, two of our former Martha Ellers Interns: Natalie Rizzo (left) and Bella Adkins (2nd from right). It was so good to connect with them again!
