A peek inside the high tunnel!

This project has been a labor of love! The build took place last summer into the fall months and I am so grateful to my husband for all of the hours put in to make this a reality! We are also so grateful to family and friends who volunteered their time time to help πŸ’•

We still have some things to work on before it is completed - wiring, irrigation, installing the fans and so on….

In the meantime it has been great to escape to the tunnel especially during cold weather to enjoy the warmth and the early signs of spring - the bluets and violets made their appearance way before the rest of the field. This will be a game changer for earlier flowers in the spring 🌸

We have tilled once and will now cover crop while we are finishing the rest of the projects. I’m already dreaming of a fall planting to overwinter πŸ’

What spring flowers are you seeing?

Hello everyone!

I hope you are able to enjoy the beautiful sun and crisp air today β˜€οΈ

It is a big day for some of the seedlings as this is their first time outside! Many of them are starting the hardening off process to acclimate to the real world.

Hoping the nighttime temperatures stay up above 30 degrees so they can be planted out soon!

It is 100 degrees in the high tunnel today - I can close my eyes and imagine a tropical locale 🌴
As much as I would love to start planting in the tunnel, there still is much preparation to do. But imagining it filled with beautiful plants is exciting for the future 🌸

Happy Spring - my favorite time of year with all of the hope and potential wrapped up in the bluest of skies and the most vibrant unrivaled greens!

Hello everyone πŸ‘‹

It has been a while! It is unbelievable to me that we are nearing the end of March! I took some time off of social media after the holidays for a much needed break. It has been wonderful to rest, recharge, and catch up on reading while I had the time!

There has been a lot of farm happenings behind the scenes here…

🌻 seed trays have been started with two full shelving units overflowing with the first flowers of the season

🌻 equipment ordered for another set up for more seeds - that way we can have multiple successions throughout the spring and summer

🌻 we are 90% complete on a high tunnel build which will be an absolute game changer for the farm in the future, extending our season for more flowers and potentially some veggies

🌻 on deck will be cover cropping and soil building plans

🌻 and of course nurturing our dahlia tubers over this very cold winter including some trials of different storage methods

It has been so wonderful to get hands into soil again and I look so forward to sharing all of the flowers with you. I think we can all agree we need beauty and sunshine in our lives right now πŸ’›

As always, thanks for checking in and following along!

I spotted this dried dahlia on the window sill of the front porch and wondered what it would look like on the powdery snow. I took a quick photo before my fingers froze on this below zero morning.

Snow day today! It’s been a slow day of making oat pancakes for the first time, cozy reading by the fire, and playing outside. We discovered our dog Rosie disapproves of us making snow angels. I also saw four snow buntings fly overhead from the field, which to me feels like a Christmas miracle. For those of you in the area I hope you are finding some way to enjoy the ❄️

I have heard the expression β€œEat the frog” several times this year and I have since thought of this phrase often. I believe it may be a southern expression? It just means on your list of things to do for the day, tackle the one you are dreading the most first. As a lifelong procrastinator, this has helped me at times to jump start the day. I am happy to report I took this advice early this morning - moving all of the extension ladders we had out in the field from a big project that was just completed. Snow is coming, and these needed to be moved now or never! Grateful for the light snow cover which allowed me to use the utility sled to make this a much easier job. One βœ… off the list! Happy December everyone ❄️
