I woke up Christmas Eve to 6 degrees and negative wind chill of who knows what.

It was 5:30 AM and I walked into the living room to find some drunk on my couch.

My daughter brought him home from a late night out because he said he wanted to feed some cows.

If you’re gonna hoot with the owls…you gotta crow with the roosters! Play hard, work hard!

Yes…he is a friend of the family. May you all have family friends as nice as this! Merry Christmas to all!!

Nice to have help this morning feeding. Rebecca and Kayla (daughter #2) were visiting this weekend and got put to work!

Ian, Ian, Ian…Who knows the impact of a good strong low pressure on full term pregnant cows?
Yep, it has the ability to make them calve a few days early.
We are watching a group closely, so we set up our barnyard calving pen. With 4-6 inches of rain forecasted, this will give them the opportunity to calve under roof in a driving rain. Cow comfort at its finest!!
We will update you next week on the babies born during the blow…

Out of the blue, I was contacted by a professor at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia. She brought a group of students for a farm tour and to learn about the operations at SHAF.

They had no idea the ties I had to their college….My Uncle Lawrence, mom’s brother, attended there two years in the late 1940’s after serving in WWII. More recently, first cousin Linda’s grandson, Wes Mosteller graduated from there in 2020. Additionally, cousin Kieth went there for a year. Oh my, you should have seen their faces when I started rattling that off! Great visit!!

On June 22, 2022, we experienced a wind storm like no other. This morning, July 9, 2022, we arose to flooded fields, with water over top our fences…that is what nearly 5 inches of rain in a short period will do! Back to repairing fence!!

Thanks to my buddy Doug who took me up in his airplane yesterday.
It was a nice break from SHAF Operation Clean Up. It was nice to see things back in order—thanks to Randy Bills, Kenny Palmer, Bryan Scallon, Wes Woodruff, Hunter, Jennifer and Miriam who volunteered and my work crew who stuck with me every day-Gilbert, Zac, and Nick.
There is a wide swath of down and snapped trees through our woods showing it could have been a lot worse.

Day 4 of clean up commences at 8 AM.

After 52 hours without power, those Dominion boys finally got us up and running last night!

The storm blew through Wednesday at 5 PM and we went to work immediately. We cleared a path from the house to the barn, and started repairing cattle fences until dark.

We got back after it at 6 AM Thursday before any cows wanted to roam, making sure all cattle were secure was the top priority.
It was still raining on Thursday morning but we were able to do a little bit of tree cleanup Thursday afternoon knowing we would have a hefty insurance claim, some of the trees could not be cleared until those conversations were settled.

Friday we were able to make significant progress, with beautiful weather on our side.

Today we hope to have six massive trees cleaned up out of the field prior to beer drinking time on a Saturday afternoon with our family and friends!

SHAF took a hit from yesterday’s storm that the National Weather Service said produced 80.5 mph winds.

Barn 2 took a 40” oak through it’s roof and is resting on our Discbine, tractor, and a hay wagon full of hay. Another oak crushed two wagons and damaged our stock trailer. 30 other trees just mainly hit the ground…well, 6 trees took out cattle fencing, which we’ve been repairing all morning.

In the mist of all this we were able to help our neighbors who also had damage, but no chainsaw.

Please take time to count your blessings, check in on your neighbors and the elderly still without power.

And now we wait, we are in a holding pattern waiting on the insurance adjuster!

This calf is going to be special…born at 2:22 a.m. on Tuesday 2/22/22!

Update: Thanks for all the name suggestions!

He’s a nice bull calf sired by Intervene out of our all time high grossing female, SHAF Miss Skymere 631. Another one of those blaze faced SimAngus calves out of a purebred Angus cow!
