New Hereford baby 😍

Fall calving has officially started with this little guy out of our oldest cow and former donor that we purchase from Mike's grandmother's estate, and sired by our herd sire, NJW 79Z 81E Historian 334G ET.

Farmers and ranchers work in "acres not hours". Cows don't read a clock, and a crop needs to be harvested when it is ready, regardless of when that is. There is always one more thing that needs to be done...regardless of what time it may be.

(Case in point, some of these baby calves decided it would be fun to slide under the fence to explore, right at dinner time...thankful for neighbors who call to let us know, and dinners that can be put on pause).

On this , we are taking a moment to appreciate all of the work that goes into providing safe, nutritious, healthy food and fiber to the US and beyond.

Spring calving for our AI bred cows and ET calves had kicked into full gear around here, so of course it has turned cold and rainy.

Our spring calving herd is our smaller herd, but it includes some of our powerhouse cows, so looking at the new babies is always fun.

The also are apparently very good at hide and seek...the little guy next to the fence took a minute to find.

Why?

Because it means that their hair and bodies are doing their job and keeping the heat in to keep them warm!

Spring Sale season is almost upon us!

We're excited to be working with Virginia Hereford Association and Virginia Angus Association on their sales that will be held in conjunction with the Virginia Beef Expo this year (and we'll also have some cattle consigned!) Side note - Virginia Beef Expo Sales will be on Thursday, April 14th this year because Beef Expo falls on Easter Weekend.

So Mother Nature has decided it would be a good idea to send all of Virginia's winter in a couple week span, which means we are currently enjoying our second snow since the new year.

It's been one of those afternoons that is perfect for curling up under a blanket with some hot chocolate or tea watching a movie, but...

These girls and all their herdmates depend on us, regardless of weather. So this afternoon was all about making sure all the animals are fed and cared for to weather this snow, first. Because these animals matter to us - as future beef for the Store at Locust Hill, as breeding animals, and income, and as individuals that we care for each and every day.

Y'all. Supply chain issues are still very real and they affect everyone. These Omni 3 waterers arrive today via Amazon because we were able to get them more quickly that way than by shopping any farm store in a 100 mile radius...so we ended up supporting someone else's local farm store via Amazon.

Buy local when and where you can, and remember we're all struggling at the moment.

New Year, New Opportunities!

As we transition farming operations and expand our herd, we are excited to be able to offer some of our heifers.

First up is this March 2021 heifer sired by SCC 167Y TRUST 1701 (Reg. 43777035) and out of a Stock Option daughter from the Jensen Bros. Herefords herd.

We purchased the dam of this heifer as a bred heifer from Kevin and Sheila Jensen, and she did a fantastic job as a first calf heifer on this girl.

She's fancy enough to show, and is halter broke, and her EPD profile offers maternal and carcass performance as well.

BLL Velvet 597G 1701 I3 - Reg. 44227782; shoot us a message for more information!

09/23/2021

It might be calving season when...you open up your refrigerator and see a calf bottle on the top shelf.

Yep, there it is. And its presence is a visual representation of how much we, and all farmers, care about their animals. That bottle made its way into our fridge last night at almost midnight after a baby who was born yesterday, and was struggling, was given some extra love and food to make sure he can survive and thrive. That bottle represents the late nights and early mornings checking on cows and babies and making sure we do our very best by each and every one of them. That bottle shows just how much our cows, and farming, are more than just a job, they are truly a way of life.

So we'll continue to push aside the yogurt to make room for that calf bottle, because those babies, the animals they will become, and their mommas matter to us.
