"THANKSGIVING CHICKEN"?!
Are you having a smaller Thanksgiving gathering this year?
If so, we have a new product that might be a good fit for you, our "Thanksgiving Chicken."
We raised these chickens to be larger, in the 6.1-7.5 lb. range.

A good rule of thumb for planning portions is to plan for 1 lb. for every adult, not including left-overs. So a 7 lb. chicken will serve about 7 adults, with no left overs.
The other benefit is that these chickens are less expensive than our turkeys!

You can see those here: https://whiffletreefarmva.com/store/thanksgiving-turkey/large-chickens

NEW HONEY WHOLE WHEAT BREAD!
In addition to the sourdough that we offer, we are now offering this Honey Whole Wheat from our farmer friends at Moving Meadows Farm in Culpeper.

They freshly stone grind the whole wheat, which is chemical-free and non-GMO. The only other ingredients are filtered water, sea salt, yeast, honey, olive oil, wheat gluten (from wheat/water dough with starch removed)!
No vegetable oils, no preservatives!

The sourdough is awesome and makes some of my favorite toast, but this Honey Whole Wheat is a softer, fluffier loaf that will be a crowd pleaser for sandwiches, etc.

Thank to Moving Meadows for the great breads!

FLYING TURKEYS!?
The turkeys love to get on top of the tractor when we are moving them. After getting off the tractor, I have to prod some out of the seat when I get back up. They are funny animals--I have often thought they are more like dogs than any other animal. Well, dogs mixed with dinosaur.

This turkey made a dramatic exit from the hood of the tractor.

If you want to come see the turkeys yourself, they are right in the front pasture near the Farm Store. Come on by!

And reserve your turkey for Thanksgiving here!

OWEN, MOVING HENS IN THE MISTY MORNING!
This photo is from Monday morning when Owen was moving the hens to fresh pasture.
A pretty morning, a beautiful photo, and Owen doing a great job!

This photo is sort of the equivalent of beach house photography for farmers! Ha!

If there were vacation homes for farmers, and this photo was on the wall (next to the fridge dedicated to raw milk products), what would the caption say?

FAUQUIER HIGH SCHOOLS SERVE OUR PASTURE-RAISED CHICKEN!
Last week I went to Fauquier High School to meet and talk with some of students and faculty who were eating our pasture-raised chicken that was served for lunch as part of their "Farm to School Week".

It was fun for me to go back to my Alma Mater and see some of the faculty I knew from when I was a student! And to talk with some of the current students.

I hope I shook up their lunch break a little. In one group conversation, a student, in a sincere fashion, wanted to know how we slaughter the chickens, so we had a very real conversation about our techniques and how they are most humane for the chickens.

But also, it was wild being in that cafeteria. I haven't been in there for 21 years. I texted some of my old High school friends a picture of the cafeteria and said, "guess where I am.?" Immediately, they all shot back "FHS cafeteria." Leaves a mark.
One my friends commented that lunch is one of the hardest periods of High school! True. Especially for me when I transferred there as a sophomore and didn't have any friends and everyone else had their friends. Oooh, that was rough! But I survived! Ha!

Thanks again to Natalie Lauren and the Fresh Program and the Fauquier County Public Schools for making this happen!

Fauquier feeding the best to Fauquier!
I hope we can keep doing more and more of this going forward!

SLOW TV: COWS IN THE SUNSHINY RAIN!
Yesterday I was moving the cattle to fresh pasture and some big black storm clouds came straight for me. I braced to get drenched.

But it mostly passed off to the side, and gave a very beautiful and refreshing sunshiny rain!
The cows and I were happy for the cool off!

Not the kind of TV to put you on the edge of your seat (ha!), but I loved to watch the cows tearing off fresh grass, the sun shining, and the rain cooling.

It is a beautiful time of year!

JOEY AND BRANDON FROM KETTLE RUN CLEARING FENCES!
I did a terrible job of getting Joey's and Brandon's faces in these pictures, but that is because they are going all out on clearing this fence line.

They are students in Kettle Run High School's job training program and will be coming out for a couple hours each week to work on some projects here.

I challenged them with some goals of how many feet of fence to clear in an hour. They were jumping on that challenge! I like their attitude!

Thanks guys!

LAST FRESH CHICKEN UNTIL APRIL 2022!
This is our last batch fresh chicken until April 2022! Eek! Enjoy it while you can! Now through Saturday!

Heads up, we will have plenty of frozen chicken to get you through the winter!

Why do we not have fresh chicken in the winter?
1. It is stressful for the meat birds to be out in the cold weather.
2. And we would have issues with freezing water.
3. And it is not good for the pasture to have that poultry manure when the grasses and soil microbes are dormant. What was an asset (poultry manure), would become in the winter a liability, and burn up the pasture and run off into the streams.

Which is why I ask that you hang with us on the frozen chicken through the winter. It is what is best for the animals, land, and eaters!

Thank you all!

HURRAY FOR FAUQUIER HIGH SCHOOLS!
I just delivered a bunch of our chicken drumsticks to my alma mater, Fauquier High School (FHS), for their "Farm to School Week"!

This is hopefully a watershed moment. I have been farming here for 12 years and this is the first time that the Fauquier County Public Schools have ever gotten food from us! There are lots of reasons it is hard for public schools to use local food (which I hope will change in the future!), so a big thanks to Natalie Ortiz for making this happen. And to Lindsey here pictured, and her staff, for cooking our food!

Despite living 5 miles from FHS, I have not much been there since I graduated in 2000. In order to drop off I had to go by some old haunts. Gosh, the memories and feelings that flooded me! High school seemed like such a momentous time! Ha!

And high school Jesse would have been pretty surprised to see what current Jesse is doing! I never had a thought of farming until reading a Wendell Berry novel the summer after I graduated from college.

It has been a surprising path, and in that path I am grateful for the connections to my past, like delivering our pasture-raised chicken to Fauquier High School! Eat up Falcons!

ADRIENNE PREPPING FOR NEW HENS!
Adrienne Owen has been preparing for a new flock of hens we are getting on Monday. Here she is pulling a 40'x20' schooner through our parking area to bring it down to our "bottomland" behind the Farm Store.
It was tricky. We had to clear a wide path. Took some chainsaw work. Lesson is, if you need to get a 20' wide schooner between fences and branches, give yourself around 30' of clearance.

I am really excited about this. These hens are going to have some lush pasture. And this pasture has never had poultry on it before, so it is going to love the fertilizing! Will make even better grass for our cattle!

When you come by the Farm Store you can walk down our 30' wide path to see the new hens, happy on their lush pasture!

Thanks again to Adrienne for her work and thoughtfulness on this project!

TEAM BREAKFAST! SURVEY: WANNA JOIN US?!
Karen Shufflebarger made this beautiful quiche for our Team breakfast last Friday! Whiffletree eggs and veggies from her dad's garden!
Was delicious!

I have had this thought of opening up some slots for some of our team meals. Maybe start off once per month. And you can sign up to join us. Payment would be a donation kind of thing.
It would be an opportunity for you to get a really tasty meal, and you to get to know your farmers better and us to get to know you better. We could take a crack at answering any questions you brought!
Would probably be a breakfast or lunch on a Monday or Wednesday?

Would you be interested in that? Please comment below with a "Yes" or "No" to give us an idea if you all might be interested.

Thank you!

WHAT ARE THESE?
I was out setting up fence to move the cattle this week and I saw these really large wasps(?) going in and out of that whole in the tree.
Do you know what they are and anything about them?

Had me moving fast past them, anticipating a sharp sting as I got a little too close to set up my fence, but thankfully they left me alone.

Our Whiffletree Farm 17lb turkey! First shot "I'm done!" Second, "tradition!"
I have been receiving Whiffletree Farms eggs and meat in my CSA for a couple of years now. Yesterday, I went to pick up two turkeys I had ordered for Thanksgiving. My daughter was with me. We told the young man what we had ordered, and he prepared to fill the order. A man came in after we had, and told them what he had ordered, and the young man immediately proceeded to process his order first, even though my daughter and I had been ahead of him in line. It's not petty to point out inconsideration, and it's not pleasant to have to try to explain to my daughter why a man who was behind her got served first.
