EAT YOUR HOME!
The concept of home is a big deal for me. A large part of why I do what I do is because of my quest for "home"--an integrated and rooted life.

Wendell Berry has been a significant influence on me. And he harps on this idea. Something along these lines: humans are happiest when they have a strong connection with and affection for their home--which is both the place and people. And modern life as we know it, often harms our connection to home. It makes us transient and isolated and disconnected from our home and people. Our community shrinks and/or becomes more superficial. Most of us don't live where we grew up. Most of us are not surrounded by big extended families. Most of us are not surrounded by people who know our grandparents, parents, children, childhood friends. Work, family, education, home, children, leisure, the elderly--all of it--are usually spread all over the place. They are "dis-integretated." Berry would say this modern life has given us advantages, like efficiencies and wealth, but not often great happiness.
Modern life can end up making us into strangers to each other, and strangers to our home. In this sense, modern life can make us homeless

There are lots of great reasons to eat food from farms like ours--local and regeneratively raised. Good for the health of the land, good for the health of the animals, good for the health of the eater, good for the farmer, good for our community, good for our local economy. But another reason that it is good to eat from farms like ours is that it is contributing to your "homefulness" (yes, I just made up that word, bear with me!).
In this sense, "homelessness" could be described as disconnection from our people and place, and "homefulness" as connection and intimacy with our people and place.
Well, eating food that literally came from OUR soil, water, sunshine, grass, animals-- you are literally eating your HOME! Your home is literally becoming part of YOU! This is deep intimacy with your place. Maybe this seems like a stretch, but I don't think so. It is the reality.
There is a deep satisfaction that can be had with becoming so rooted in your home, in your place, that you literally take it into your body, and you and your home get all mixed up and become one!
This is part of what deep homefulness looks like.
A common slogan has been "know where your food comes from." That is a good thing. But I think that is a good thing because we essentially want to know that our food comes from our home, so that we can eat our home, and have more and more homefullness!

Am I totally out there, and crazy, or does this make sense to you?

TURKEYS ON PASTURE!
Here is a photo of our turkeys on fresh pasture from yesterday's chore time.
Yesterday also marks a yearly milestone--the first person to inquire about Thanksgiving turkeys! Let's go!

If you are also a planner here are some of the basic details.
--Yes, we will have our pasture-raised turkeys available for Thanksgiving and otherwise!
--Raised on fresh pasture, non-GMO feed, no antibiotics, no chemicals, raised and slaughtered humanely by us on our farm!
--Reservations for those will go live on October 1st!
--You will have the options of getting those from us through our Farm Store or our Neighborhood Deliveries.
--Wholesale customers, please hit me up for those details.
--Yes, Thanksgiving dinner is my favorite meal!

I am putting our New York Strips on sale!
100% grass-fed, no antibiotics, no chemical wormers, no chemical sprays on the land, no hormones!
Usually $27/lb, on sale for $24/lb. They range from half to 1 pound steaks. This photo is of a rare larger steak. Very tender cuts from the loin.

The sale will run through the end of August! Hopefully you can get in for some of your summer grilling, paired with peak tomato time!

WHAT IS THIS FISH?
Isaac and I were setting up cattle fencing earlier this week and we heard this funny croaking noise. I looked around and saw a baby blue heron! It was very cute but a little awkward looking.

Then right after that we saw this gargantuan fish in our stream, Great Run. The biggest fish I ever saw in here before was like 6". This fish was like 2' long! I was so shocked when I saw it, swimming along all lazy like!

Do you know what kind of fish it is? And do you know any details about it? It was in a bend in the stream that is a bit more of a pool.

LAST FRESH CHICKEN TILL END OF AUGUST!
Heads up! This coming week (7/27-7/30) will be our last batch of fresh chicken until 8/24. (We will have plenty of frozen chicken in the meantime.)

We have a 3 week break in the chickens as we had to make room in our mobile shelters for our turkeys!
(Thanksgiving is just around the corner?!...)

And this also allows us to take our awesome Poultry Processing Crew on a hike!

GIZZARD SALE!
We had run out of gizzards over the winter and some of you had been waiting for us to restock this spring.
We are restocked and I put the gizzards on sale!
These are fully cleaned gizzards, ready to cook for human consumption.
But we also have customers who use them as a pet food supplement. They are very nutritious!

In a 1lb pack there are about 5 gizzards.

They are normally $4 per 1 lb pack, but on sale for $3.

"Made an amazing paella Valencina with the whole chicken. It was AMAZING!
We had a big white party on Sunday that I made it for. I will probably do it again for a special event.
I did have a guest ask me where we got our chicken from because it was delicious. I told them we got them from your farm and she yelled 'that's where I get my chicken from. I knew it was amazing!'"

My daughter Josephine has grown her own zucchinies and made these delicious loaves!

PORTERHOUSE AND MANOR HOUSE!
Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting an old friend of Liz's from high school and her family at our "Whiffletree Manor House." They were on a fun RV trip across half the country, hitting up family, friends and some weddings. With 3 young kids! Making some great memories I am sure!
Liz's friend shared this photo of a dinner they made with our porterhouse for her brother at their next stop in Philly!

This is a beautifully renovated historic home, with nice outdoor space, a large sunroom, hot tub, and the farm is yours to explore--play in the stream, feed the ducks in the pond, see all our farm animals, hike in the woods, stock up what you need at the Farm Store, watch us farmers make lots of animals happy! And hit me up for any recommendations for what is fun and beautiful in my home of Fauquier County--restaurants, breweries, wineries, hikes, shops, parks, etc.!

STOCK PROVISIONS!
Earlier this week I received a very kind call from Alex, the GM at Stock Provisions @stockrva ,a butcher shop in Charlottesville. Alex just received and was breaking down a steer from us, and he was pumped about what he was seeing.

I definitely know the pain of getting phone calls from unhappy customers--when we mess up an order or don't communicate as clearly as we should about something--and while those are not fun, I appreciate those as opportunities to make a situation right and to improve our work.
BUT, it sure is nice every once in a while to hear from really happy customers too! Ha! Know what I mean?
And Alex was glowing about what we sent him! A for-sure good feeling.

After we got off the phone, Alex sent me this picture of the chuck section, which is the steer's shoulder. Look at that intramuscular fat! And that is 100% grass-fed! Oh boy! I want to eat that!

Thank you to Stock Provisions for getting beef from us! Thank you to Alex for taking time out of his day to give me a kind call!
And if you want to get a piece of that batch of beef, we will have that coming back from the slaughterhouse this coming Wednesday.

Sale on gallon and half gallons dated 7/08 for Farm Store purchase only. $7.95 gallon and $4.95 1/2 gallon! Local, 100% Grass-fed, A2A2, No Antibiotics, Non- Homogenized milk! We also have fresh blueberries and blackberries that just came in this morning!

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!
This video was when we were moving our cattle last week. I love to see them run out of the woods into fresh pasture--kinda epic like a football team coming from the locker rooms to the field! Just these 1000 pound beautiful beasts only eat grass and drink water! Take that NFL!
