Nobody makes us do this.

There's no regulation anywhere requiring a hay grower to send a sample to a lab. No inspector checks. No certification we'd lose. Most growers never bother, and nothing bad happens to them.

We run the tests because a number you can check beats a description you have to trust. Ten samples this season, every result posted, including the one that came back highest.

If you've been feeding hay you're not sure about, this is the season to stop guessing. Cold weather means more hay and less grass, and whatever's in the bale is most of what your horse gets from here until April.

Come look at the reports. Then come look at the hay.

Delivery day in Wayne. 🐐

Sean's goats met our truck and announced they had this. One climbed up on the flatbed to inspect the load. Two more went to work on the bales below. 💪

JR handled supervision from behind the camera. 😎

Somebody still had to stack the hay. That would be the one guy on our crew who wasn't a goat or holding a phone.

Mix, grass, grass mix, alfalfa mix — tested July through September, NFTA certified, every report posted where anyone can pull it down.

Fall is when horse people start asking about hay sugar, and the honest answer is that it varies by lot, by cutting, and by how mature the stand was when it got cut. Which is why one number on a website doesn't help you and ten reports do.

Hunter approved. 🤠

We dropped off a fresh load at Scott's barn in Oswego, and Hunter didn't wait to be served. He leaned out of his stall and went straight for the stack.

That's sugar plus starch on sample 1995586, a mix hay processed September 2nd. ESC 1.34, starch 2.10, crude protein 13.90. It's the lowest number we've pulled this season.

We're not going to tell you it's the right hay for your horse — we've never met him. What we'll tell you is that the full report is posted, unedited, and your vet can read it in about ninety seconds.

Two bales off our farm. Same tag on both. One has nearly three times the sugar of the other.

We sent twelve samples to the lab this season. Our Mix Hay came back anywhere from 3.44% to 9.27% sugar and starch. Same label. Same fields. Same summer.

So if you're feeding a horse who can't handle sugar, here's the part that matters: the type printed on the tag gets you close on protein and fiber. It tells you nothing reliable about the sugar. Nothing does, except a lab.

That's why we test every crop, and why every report is posted unedited — including the sample that tested worst.

Ten bags went out this season. Ten reports came back. All ten are on the website — including the lot that came back highest, because posting only your good numbers isn't testing, it's advertising.

If you're shopping hay this fall and somebody tells you theirs is low sugar, ask them for the report. Not the claim. The report.

There's no rule that says a hay grower has to send samples to a lab. Most don't. We bag it, box it, and mail it to Analab in Fulton anyway — because we want the number, and because our own horses eat off these same stacks.

Here's all ten lots we've run this season, late July through the first week of September. Not the best one. All of them.

Sugar and starch, lowest to highest: 3.44, 3.82, 4.87, 5.37, 5.43, 5.66, 6.15, 7.29, 7.63, 9.27.

Mix hay, grass hay, grass mix, alfalfa mix. Every one NFTA certified. Every one posted.

Ask your vet what number she wants to see for your horse, then come check ours against it.

Ask anyone here what Galusha is and they won't say "a barn." They'll say "my people." 🐴

Cold mornings, wash-day chaos, somebody always there to hold your horse while you run to the truck — that's the part that never makes the price list. We're small on purpose, so it stays that way.
