We have two yearlings (born February 2024) looking for a new zip code! Both are 100 percent Boer.

They need a new zip code through no fault of their own. I just don't have the barn space for kidding out 18 does and the human kids have picked their project does for next year.

So these two need to go. Both would be ready for breeding at their new home.

Well it's time to gear up for fair! The kiddos are halter breaking the newbies, refreshing the oldies, and having fun (well and some not fun) along the way!

The show is Sunday August 10th, 9:30 am at the Wyoming county fair grounds in Pike NY. It's always nice to have a crowd to watch them show off all their hard work.

It has been a busy past ten days or so.

We finally have kids on the ground after a rough start to kidding season.

Minerva started off with three bucklings. The smallest came first and she accidentally sat on him, he made it another 24 hours, but sadly didn't make it. Her remaining two bucklings haven't missed a beat though. Oreo was the most ferocious at nursing and stayed with mom. Klondike ended up coming in to be a bottle baby (of course they were born on the coldest night we had had in a while).

Next up was Izzy. Not to be outdone, she had FOUR, yes four babies. Two bucklings, two doelings. The girls came into the house, Izzy is raising the boys. We have plenty of pics of Pipsqueak (you'll see why she's named that) and sister. But the boys aren't as easy to get a pic of, it's a blur of white streaking across the pen.

After her C-section last year, we weren't sure if Athena would get rebred or if she would be able to have babies naturally or need another C-section. Well boss lady got home from work and helped Athena deliver twin bucklings. One was alive and vigorous, the other was DOA, it appears big brother had been clogging the works.

While boss lady was cleaning up from delivering Athena's babies, Thumbelina wanted to be done with pregnancy too. She, being the star achiever she is, delivered a caped traditional and a solid black doelings. The caped came into the house, again, that damn 5 degree temps in the barn is just brutal for these little wet stinkers.

That same night, Coco had had enough and gave us twin girls and a buckling. One doeling is a red paint, the others are solid red with a titch of white ticking here and there. The boy came in for the bottle brigade (we won't ask her to raise three).

The next day Maleficent gave eviction orders to a huge doeling, looks just like her mama.

Boss lady got one day off, and then Artemis decided "enough is enough." And made boss lady late for work because she had to help deliver triplets. Two doelings and one buckling. And let me tell you, they have some chrome on them! It's easy to forgive confirmation faults with pops of color, but these kiddos are amazing, so much bone! It was the best Valentine's Day gift ever!

Then at 10 pm Bloomers decided to be difficult. She had a single huge doeling. What she didn't put into a second kid, she put all into a big noggin, strong back and thick long legs. After a few tries getting the baby out the natural way, boss lady and boss man decided it was more important to just get baby out and save Mama some trauma to her hind end. By midnight then section was done, barn cleaned up, towels ready to wash, baby tubed with colostrum. The little flashy red dapple came into the house since Bloomers was not interested in being mom after her ordeal. Can't fault the girl. So now she gets to heal and baby will be the newest bottle brigade member.

In total we have 9 babies in the barn and 8 in the house 🙄

Thank goodness boss man got boss lady a couple bags of milk replacer for an early Valentine's Day present.

Well kidding season 2024 kicked off today!

Izzy did not disappoint! She had three decent sized doelings (two 8 lbs ones and a 9 lb one) this evening.

During the day she was unsettled, doing more talking than she usually does and did not clear her hay feeder.

After chores we "had a hunch" to just check and make sure everything was okay.

Well surprise surprise. One of the babies was blocking the way for the other two. Instead of coming the right way, she was coming (or not coming actually) bum and hip first. When I first got her out I wasn't sure if she was alive. The kids start drying her off and stimulating her, and p**f she started breathing, shortly followed by yammering for dinner. The next baby came backwards and the final one read the memo and decided to come the right way.

We did our usual, babies were wiped off to make sure their faces were clean, they start drying, and given to mom to keep working on cleaning up. We dipped navels (something that I am a**l retentive over, it will happen three more times in the next 48 hours) and then weighed each baby (again, something that I am a**l about, a baby that gains weight is a baby I don't have to guess if it's getting enough to eat). Then we left mom and babies to their devices.

It was so much fun to watch the human kids in action, cleaning babies, gathering supplies as they are needed.

Next up is likely Dizzy and her mom Amarilla. Both look like clown cars, so we shall see how things go. But for now, mama and her little girls are tucked in for the night.

It's that time of year!

Thanksgiving turkey time!

We will have 20 birds available after butcher time on November 4th.

These turkeys aren't your typical broad breasted birds. They are royal palms or royal palms crossed with red bourbons. That means they will not have thin, lean skin. These amazing birds lay down fat and have a thicker skin that is almost like pork cracklins' depending on how you cook them.

We are partial to an overnight brine and then smoking them on the big day (it frees up the oven for other things to be cooked!). These birds seem like they were designed to be cooked on a smoker. The thicker skin traps the juices, they do not get an obscenely large breast on them (there is plenty there, and enough for leftovers), and therefore the entire bird cooks evenly on a smoker. In fact, one of the main reasons we started raising our own birds was because we wanted a bird that cooked evenly when smoked.

If you are interested, please let Ash or Leo know!

AAAAND, it's a cider press!

So excited for this fall! Between berry harvesting, jelly making, salsa making and applesauce making, we can now make apple cider!

Boss man ordered it over a year ago as a surprise for boss lady.

All the assistants were thrilled to boot! If all goes well, this press should last long enough to be handed down to the assistants when they become a boss!

The girls have been hard at work, days are longer, more sunshine to be had, and spring is on its way!

That means we have plenty of breakfast rounds!

Three dozen rounds for ten clucks!

(They are *almost* too pretty to eat 😉)
