Steak Haché (French-Style Ground Beef)
Most people think ground beef is just for tacos or burgers.
But it can be a whole lot more than that.
This is a simple, old-school way to turn ground beef into something that feels like a steak dinner—without overcomplicating it.
It’s called steak haché.
Basically: seasoned ground beef, pan-seared, finished with a simple sauce.
🥩 Ingredients
• 1 lb ground beef
• Salt + pepper
• Butter
• Shallot or onion (finely chopped)
• Garlic
• Dijon mustard
• Beef stock
• Optional: fresh herbs (parsley, thyme)
🔪 How to Make It
1. Form the patties
Shape ground beef into thick, steak-like patties. Don’t overwork it.
2. Season well
Salt and pepper both sides.
3. Sear hot
Cook in a hot pan with butter until browned on both sides.
4. Build the sauce
Remove patties, then in the same pan:
• Add shallots + garlic
• Deglaze with a splash of stock
• Stir in Dijon mustard
• Let it reduce slightly
5. Finish
Return patties to the pan and spoon the sauce over top.
🍽️ Serve With
• Potatoes (mashed or roasted)
• Simple greens
• Or just eat it straight from the pan
This is exactly why we always talk about keeping ground beef stocked.
