It can be hard to know if a sparkling is made in the champagne method. A number of sparkling styles, legally, must be made that way so knowing some of those will help.
Crèmant, Cava, Corpinnat, Cap Classique, Franciacorta, Trento doc, Alta Lange these are all some of the styles required to made in the champagne method.

Sparkling wine labels often show how the wine was made.
France: Méthode Traditionelle, Méthode Champenois
Italy: Metodo Classico
Spain: Metodo Tradicional
South Africa: Cap Classique
America: Traditional Method
You get the idea. If you don’t see anything like this on the label, it may be made in the Tank method. The exception is sparkling wines that legally must be made in the champagne method, which I’ll cover in an upcoming video.

Champagnes can age better than many people think. This one is 10 years old and could age several more. It’s still fresh but has more depth and complexity than younger bottles. I love champagnes with some age on them. What aged champagnes have you had and what did you think?

Hearts Delight is a charity raising funds for the American Geary Association. There were several stations pouring champagnes, a charity auction and formal dinner showcasing the best of Laurent Perrier. I was happy to be a part of this event which will grow to an even bigger champagne event next year. 🥂

Quality of any wine is directly tied to the wine being in balance. When one element overshadows another, the quality begins to suffer. With sparkling wine it’s an easy test. Let it get warm in the glass, any flaws or issues with balance will begin to be noticeable. Mass produced wines, sparkling and still, will usually struggle with this.

A quality well balanced wine or champagne stays balanced even when it’s not as cold. With this one, it’s the sweetness. As it warmed up a little the sweetness became more pronounced and out of balance with the rest. That changes the quality level of any wine.

The class is split into two sessions.
