Portugal & People | A few of the makers who made the trip memorable
We spent a few days with Elias Macovela, tasting his w**es and seeing where/how he makes it. One of the smaller producers we visited, he had some of our favorite w**es of the trip.
It was good to see his emphasis on time hasn’t changed since our last visit. Elias will NOT be rushed in his w**emaking…or releasing. 😅

Elias Macovela makes w**e from two of Portugal’s 14 w**e regions (Bairrada and the Dau). He’s often a one-man show, taking care of the vineyards, making the w**e, growing distribution, and entertaining/educating curious, w**e loving Americans.
Forever grateful for him.

João Grave is the man behind his family’s w**ery, Pera-Grave Lda. To sit and taste with him and Vanda Margarida was a gift. The w**e and the property are steeped in history and family ties, including the beautiful chapel and the house overlooking the vineyards and tasting room.

Diogo Grilo is one of the w**emakers at Lobo de Vasconcellos W**es in Alentejo. A newer w**ery in the region, it was a great contrast to some of the older w**eries we visited to better understand the region and the country.

When we arrived, Diogo gave us straw hats, threw us in the back of a pickup truck, and took us on a ride through the vineyard, one of my favorite experiences of the trip. The terroir varies throughout the vineyard and we were able to take a closer look before we sat for a tasting to better understand the difference it made in our glasses.

Portugal & W**e
Last year’s visit was an intro, this year’s visit was a deeper dive into the w**e, food, and people of Portugal.

I still don’t have the words to describe to w**es and experiences that are now tattooed on my brain and made me fall in love with this place. Intimate tastings, lunches, and dinners with some of Portugals best makers. Riding through an Alentejo vineyard in the back of a truck. Tiled buildings and an Airbnb that neighbored a farm 👀. From Porto to Lisbon and a half dozen villages in between, it feels like we experienced 2 months in our 10 days there.

Many, many, many thanks to Elias Macovela who took time from his busy w**emaking to make sure we had a thorough and amazing experience in Portugal.

Bear with me over the next few days as I share some of the specifics. 😅

Beauvine Burger Concept & Pinot Noir
The w**e: A 2019 Pinot Noir from ARABILIS in Willamette Valley. We’re fans of an Arabilis sparkling and almost forgot that their Pinot is great as well. It’s soft and silky, earthy and slightly floral. Light-bodied and easy to drink, I’m kind of kicking myself for only grabbing one bottle.
The food: The Lafayette Burger from Beauvine has brie, Cabernet onions, apricot mustard, and arugula was awesome with the w**e. I thought (hoped) the brie would be more pronounced, but it gave a nice creaminess that, combined with the onions, felt like the burger version of something I’d pull from a cheese board to drink with a glass of Oregon Pinot. The duck fat fries were also delicious.

Shrimp tacos & Riesling
The w**e: Ria’s W**es 2024 Grace Riesling, a dry, lightly floral, not so lightly citrusy and acidic sip from the Finger Lakes (Seneca, to be exact). Highly rated, if you care about those things, but a perfect w**e for a summer dinner.
The food: Sha-rimp tacos from STUFT Restaurant ◇ Food Truck ◇ Haas Sauce. Blackened sheimp, cabbage, pico, goat cheese, and sol sauce. The veggie, cheese, sauce blend was awesome with the w**e.

July sips | (Work) stress was high, w**e and cocktails were better.
From an Umami Mami in my new neighborhood and fried chicken, ch*****ne and Chicago fireworks to kick off Convention to an identified bubble on top of the Obama Presidential Center and various bubbles around the Willamette Valley, I am full (and tired. 😅). All of it was even better because of the people I drank from and with.

My **e and I are home, thanks to Southwest Airlines’s Sip & Ship. From certain w**e regions (Cali, Oregon, Washington) you can check up to a case of w**e for free. I think Alaska Airlines offers something similar.

Not an ad, just something I wish I knew earlier. And, you know, sharing is caring. 😉

Work hard, play hard: A story in two pictures

When I’m not digging in on w**e, I’m locking in with my civil rights/advocacy colleagues. The rest of the year will be steeped in the work, but will always prioritize some play.

A quick stop into was the perfect post-rally side quest. The *****neclandestin Boréal the perfect way to wind down.

In a world of trendy and basic w**e bars, be a . Ch*****ne tastings that change weekly, knowledgeable staff, and lineups from smaller producers you can’t find everywhere. 👌🏽

I need this on the East Coast. 😩 Almost missed my flight but no regrets in squeezing in a pre-flight tasting.

A glass of w**e and a snack is about to become my new personality. 😅
A quick side quest through NYC’s Chinatown and Lower East Side w**e bars while I was there for the Webby’s:
Loaded (salty!) chips at .nextdoor
Chorizo empanada at
Marinated olives at
Next time I’ll do better at picking a thoughtful pairing. Not one glass I picked went with the snack I had, but still had a great time.
