VIP sessions are always one of my favorite parts of Kanpai! to Sake Day. 🍶
It’s such an intimate time. You get to learn more about the sake, hear directly from the experts, and enjoy delicious food prepared specially for the session by the talented team at . Every year I look forward to it.

This year, I was so lucky to have two very special people lead our VIP sessions.
Kuji-san , who actually had a big influence on me. He’s the reason DC Sake cō is named DC Sake cō! 😄 It’s a bit of a long (and funny) story, and I’d love to share it on my podcast one day.

And of course, the Sake Ninja, Chris Johnson , our great friend from day one. When I was looking for a venue for Kanpai! to Sake Day, Chris was the one who told me I should talk to team Love Makoto. I’m still so grateful for that advice. That we get to keep growing!

For a milestone celebration like this year I couldn’t have asked for more perfect hosts. Thank you both from the bottom of my heart. And thank you to everyone who joined us. Your energy made the day!!!

It was one beautiful evening in Chevy Chase! 🍂
Thank you so much to everyone who came out to join us for yet another sake event this month! Thought we were done with sake events for October, especially after Sake Day? Wrong! 😄

A huge thank you also to BirdSong Thai for welcoming all of us. You have such a warm, cozy neighborhood spot, and we felt right at home!

And thank you to Jake Jake Burdick of Bōken Sake for such an intimate guided tasting, and to Chef Michael Khan of MiShi Sushi for pop-up dishes that made the pairings so much fun.

Bōken means “adventure” in Japanese, and that’s exactly what the night was about. It’s always so much fun to adventure into a new neighborhood (Chevy Chase was new to us!), meet a new community and make new friends. But I have to say, seeing so many familiar faces... YOU know who I’m talking about! 😉 made our day…. THANK YOU!

Thank you very much for joining “5th Annual Kanpai! to Sake Day in DC” last Sunday! 🍶

It was AMAZING to celebrate our fifth year with you. I’m so happy you chose to spend your Sunday with us, enjoying time with your friends and hopefully making even more new ones!

This year, to celebrate our fifth anniversary, the calligrapher Kakaku kindly offered to write something for us. It gave me a chance to look back on these five years, and the word I chose was 『酒縁』(shu-en), “sake encounters.”

Everyone who was part of this day and beyond… from our amazing partners and passionate teammates to, of course, YOU... we all connected because of sake. And I know those connections keep growing in places I never even see: making new friends and building communities of your own.

So here’s to looking forward to many more 『酒縁』 .
I’m already looking forward to saying Kanpai with you again next year!

Our next Deep Dive, we’re bringing together sake, food, and a shared spirit of adventure for a special evening at Birdsong. This edition features Jake Burdick of BŌKEN Sake and Chef Michael Kang of MiShi, each sharing the journey behind what they create.
