We had a fun time with a local Girl Scout troop joining in on LEAF Youth class yesterday! We took a farm tour with Farmer Foster, harvested strawberries 🍓 and radishes and put our chopping skills to work making a radish slaw! Parents got to taste test too!

Reminder that there is no LEAF class on this Sunday 5/29 due to the holiday weekend.

This spring, we hosted 8 high school interns who participated in the Certificate Program in Regenerative Urban Agriculture. Over the course of several months from February to May, the interns learned about and participated in crop planning, plant propagation, bed prep, soil science, composting, companion planting, integrated pest management, irrigation, nutrient management, harvesting, food preservation, and more! The students worked on 3 group projects: 3-bin system composting, bokashi composting, and rain garden.

Pictured here: the students with their group projects as well as Farm Educator Nia Kiara Cole showcasing the farewell meal they prepared with mac and cheese, sautéed collards harvested from the farm, whole roast chicken from @deeprootsfarm, and corn.

Congratulations to the students for completing the internship!

Kids Art Party!
Have you noticed the new raised beds in front of the farm? They are an extension of our youth garden space and we need kids from around the neighborhood to help make them special!
Coming up on Sunday, May 22, join us anytime between 3:00 and 4:30 to add your mark- we’ll be stenciling fruits and veggie images, so wear paint ready clothes and come on over to see us! We’ll have some light snacks available.
The raised beds are located by the main farm gate just opposite the playground in the Park at LeDroit.
Kids are also invited to stay for LEAF class right after from 4:30-5:45!
And a special thanks to local artist Aiyana Adams for making custom stencils for us to use!

Join us in welcoming Val to the team as our new Farm Assistant! Val was called to return to the land just 6 years ago when they found a deep connection to herbal medicine, just before focusing on agriculture as an “ehakihet” or farmer. While farming has been a part of both sides of their family, they’ve felt drawn to the land to do their own work in agriculture, combining today’s methods of farming with methods their Piscataway ancestors and living elders practiced. Val feels a deep calling to work with Mama Earth to reclaim and remember a relationship with the land, water, and plant and animal relatives. Aside from farming both vegetables and livestock, their other work is in natural resource stewardship in the Chesapeake Bay. In their spare time, you can catch Val hunting wild edibles in a local forest.

Earth Day GIVEAWAY for DMV School Garden Teachers & Urban Farmers I founded Amma's Choice, a natural organic beauty line because I did not want my young daughter exposed to too many chemicals and I sincerely love to be close to mother nature. The land is in my blood! My grandparents had a family citrus, cocoa, and coffee estate, and they always had a variety of crops- that I shared with friends and neighbors… I feel so very privileged to always have had fresh, organic produce as a child. This experience truly shaped my holistic perspective. Hence, when my daughter started DC Public School in 2017, I worked to ensure the under-utilized green space would be transformed into a school garden that will be opening this year. As a parent, I sincerely appreciate the school garden teachers' hard work to educate our kids about gardening and the environment- helping to create new generations of environmental stewards… as well as our local farmers who have a deep connection to the Mother Earth providing our communities with delicious and nutritious produce… THANK YOU - DC/ Maryland/ Virginia!!! So, we are humbly saluting all those who toil the soil! We are giving away 5 Amma’s Choice Hands & Feet Gift Baskets! #HappyEarthDay2021 #ori-shea body balm, #ori-cocoa lotion bar, #ori-honey oatmeal bar soap To Enter our GIVEAWAY Simply: 1.
