President Trump's latest tariff actions for steel and aluminum run counter to his America First trade agenda.

📰Read our press statement, as well as reactions from the Brewers Association and the American Fruit & Vegetable Coalition: https://www.cancentral.com/president-trumps-aluminum-and-steel-tariff-actions-hurt-americas-farmers-food-and-beverage-producers-and-can-manufacturers/

🥫These latest tariff actions are increasing the cost to make U.S. food and beverage cans—costs that ultimately ripple through to America's farmers, food and beverage producers, manufacturers, and consumers.

The reality is the U.S. does not currently have enough domestic capacity to meet demand for key inputs like hashtag steel and hashtag . Tariffs on these materials raise prices on American-made canned goods, making them less competitive to foreign filled cans. At a time when food security and affordability are top concerns, trade policies that increase costs across the U.S. supply chain risk doing more harm than good.

Can Manufacturers Institute continues to call for targeted tariff relief—supporting American farmers, food and beverage producers, and can manufacturers while ensuring consumers have access to affordable American-made goods!

Keeping foreign canned goods at lower tariffs undermines President Trump’s promises to make groceries affordable again.

On , CMI applauds Congressman Robert Wittman for introducing the Counting Aluminum Net Surplus (CANS) Act of 2026. This federal bill will assess how much aluminum is being lost to landfills or exported instead of being recycled domestically.

By studying aluminum disposal and recycling flows, policymakers will have actionable data to boost U.S. recycling systems and keep valuable materials, like aluminum, in the domestic supply chain. Improving aluminum recovery and keeping recyclable materials in the United States ultimately will help strengthen American manufacturing.

Can Manufacturers Institute and its members are acting to improve recycling rates for beverage cans. Through policy advocacy and on-the-ground activations, including Every Can Counts U.S. and the Recycling Society's Recycling Contest, we are making a difference!

On Global Recycling Day, CMI applauds Congressman Wittman for introducing the Counting Aluminum Net Surplus (CANS) Act of 2026.

In partnership with the Household and Commercial Products Association, CMI published a new Aerosol Playbook for Material Recovery Facilities (also known as a MRF). This is a practical, solutions-oriented guide to help expand aerosol can recycling across the United States.

Yes We Can! A Practical Guide to Aerosol Recycling at MRFs provides clear, actionable steps to help facilities confidently accept and process empty aerosol cans.

This work supports our goal of increasing access to aerosol recycling — strengthening circularity, improving recovery rates, and keeping valuable metal in the loop. When manufacturers, recyclers, and policymakers collaborate, we accelerate to make real progress!

The Can Manufacturers Institute is excited to celebrate ! Thank you to Representative Haley Stevens, Rep. Dave Joyce, Rep. Miller-Meeks, & Congresswoman Chellie Pingree for your leadership on the U.S. House Recycling Caucus.

♻️To keep U.S. can making strong, we must advance circular solutions that reduce waste, create American manufacturing jobs, and ensure aluminum and steel remain in use for our domestic supply chains, national security, and future generations to come.

We’re excited to launch a new Every Can Counts recycling pilot program at East Potomac Golf Links in Washington, D.C., in partnership with National Links Trust.

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony, earlier this month, we celebrated the installation of two D.C.-themed recycling cages and several recycling bins placed across the public golf course, driving range, and mini-golf course.

This helps make it easier for golfers to recycle their aluminum beverage cans. Best of all, every can counts! Each can will be recycled for scrap aluminum value, with proceeds reinvested back into the golf course’s sustainability programs and events.

Our recycling program is a model for how golf courses nationwide can boost recycling and keep valuable aluminum in circulation.
