Grape Crate is a curated, educational wine box delivered to your door. We offer fantastic wines at under-retail prices, plus a little bit of guidance to help you understand what you're drinking and why. Then they send you notecards they want you to put in the binders. And weird vials of stuff they want you to smell. And a notebook for all those important wine notes you take. We do not do these thi
ngs. Instead, we provide three tiers of self-service wine education. The Icons: When you open the box, a 4-by-3 grid is revealed on the underside of the lid, kinda like a box of chocolates. Inside each of the 12 cells of the grid, there are four icons. Each group of four icons explains a wine – it could be a steak, a cherry, a weightlifter and a old man. Then you know the wine is good with steak, strong, tastes like cherries and is old. You are learning without even reading! The Label: We apply a secondary label on the back of each bottle with a 3- or 4-sentence, plain-English description of the wine. Very digestible, very useful, not flowery at all. You are learning in a totally painless and contained way. The Website: Website allows people to rate wine, comment on wine, learn way more about the wine and order more wine… and other stuff, too, but we don’t have to dive into that yet. You can learn as much as you could possibly want from the website! In addition to teaching you about wine, we also figure out what wines you like, tell you how to describe them, and then send you more of them. We are a learning computer. The customization begins when you take 15 seconds to rate a wine on your smartphone app. After you rate all twelve wines, Grape Crate sends a customized, emailed report that says “You liked these characteristics in wines, and you generally preferred these style of wines,” and gives a few specific wine suggestions. Every quarter, that report gets more detailed, with better data. Then, when you walk into a wine shop, you can confidently say “I like wines from this grape and this region, and I like wines that taste like this, this and this.”
