Bonjour, Friends!

This Friday night, we’re taking a spirited journey through France with four distinctive brandies from Normandy, Cognac and Gascony.

Although each begins with fermented fruit and develops its character through distillation and oak aging, the similarities end there. We’ll compare apple-based Calvados with grape-based Cognac and Bas-Armagnac, progressing from bright orchard fruit to the deep, nutty complexity of a 25-year-old spirit.

Normandy, France

Produced from acidic and bittersweet cider apples, this Calvados combines single- and double-distilled eaux-de-vie before aging for at least six years in seasoned Limousin oak. Expect baked apple, fresh peel, honey, toffee, vanilla, and warming spice, finishing dry and bittersweet.

🍇 Gilles Brisson VSOP Grande Champagne 1er Cru Cognac — 80 Proof
Cognac, France

This estate-grown Cognac is made entirely from Ugni Blanc cultivated in Grande Champagne, the premier cru of Cognac. Double-distilled and matured for five to six years, it offers baked apple, pear, dried orange peel, caramel, mocha, almond, and baking spice.
