Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, grandfathers, father figures, and anyone lucky enough to spend the day with family.

This weekend I set out in search of a legend.

The stories all sounded a little unbelievable. A maple-loving creature lurking somewhere between the forests of Vermont and the bourbon warehouses of Kentucky.

Naturally, I had to investigate.

What I found was Shortbarrel Sapsquatch, a bourbon finished with maple syrup barrels, maple spirals, and toasted oak. More importantly, I found a whiskey that somehow manages to balance all of those influences without losing sight of the bourbon underneath.

No blurry photos. No mysterious footprints.

Just one very satisfying pour.

The full hunt report is now live at the link in bio.

Have you encountered Sapsquatch in the wild?

Most people would’ve taken the rarest bottle in their collection to the summit.

I took one of the most important.

Years ago, when I was first getting into whiskey, my grandmother gave me this little bottle of Gentleman Jack. It’s traveled with me ever since. The bow finally fell off somewhere along today’s hike.

At the summit, my dad, my wife, and I each took a sip in her honor.

We shared it in one of her and my grandfather’s favorite places.

Miss you, Grandma.

Three things whiskey history class probably didn’t teach you.

The deeper I dive into whiskey, the more I realize the story is bigger than the names on the bottles and the founders in the history books.

In recognition of Juneteenth, I wanted to share a few pieces of whiskey history worth remembering and learning more about.

What’s a whiskey history fact that surprised you when you first learned it?

Whenever friends ask where they should start exploring whiskey near Northern Virginia, these are usually the places I mention first.

This isn’t a ranking of the “best” distilleries.

It’s a list of places that offer something memorable—whether that’s great whiskey, a unique experience, or a community worth being part of.

A few are obvious. A few might surprise you.

Which Virginia whiskey destination would you add?

36 years in a barrel.

Most spirits that spend that long aging become dominated by oak. This one somehow manages to stay vibrant.

Oade’s newest release, “The Balance,” comes from Ferme de Bacoge in Bas-Armagnac and may be the most aptly named bottling I’ve had from them yet. Dark fruit preserves, floral notes, spearmint, cherry liqueur, and a finish that seems to evolve for minutes.

For bourbon drinkers, it’s the closest thing I’ve found to combining some of the best qualities of Barton and Willett in a single pour.

The bottle drops Thursday (6/18) at 12:30 PM ET.

My full review is now live on the website. Link in bio.

Have you explored Armagnac yet, or are you still firmly in whiskey territory?
