Christmas has always been my favorite holiday.
When I think back to my childhood, I remember one word more than anything else: sweet.
Not just sweet treats… but sweet moments.
Sweet in the way people gave. Sweet in the way they cared.
Sure, there were a few Scrooges out there 😆
but mostly it was loving, gentle, sweet times.
My grandmother, Maw Maw Downen, was the sweetest of them all. I don’t even remember her ever raising her voice or saying anything mean.
And she could cook and bake, I tell you.
At Christmas, one thing was certain:
there was going to be peanut butter fudge, chocolate fudge, and pecan pie.
She didn’t have much money, but she knew how much I loved that peanut butter fudge.
So every Christmas, for as long as she was able, she made me my own tin full of it. Just for me.
When she left this world right around Christmas time. I decided to try and make that sweet fudge myself. It became my way of keeping her close.
I’ll be honest…
It’s not as perfect as hers was.
I don’t think I’ll ever quite match it.
But every time I stir that pot, pour that pan, and cut those little squares…
I feel like she’s right there with me.
It keeps her in my mind and in my heart.
If you’d like to taste a little piece of that memory, that love, and that tradition…
