Tomatoes are in full swing over here! When you have way more produce than you can possibly eat before it goes bad, you have to start thinking about ways to preserve your harvest.

There are plenty of great options such as canning, freezing and dehydrating. We lean heavily on freezing here, but it does require a lot of freezer space. Canning is a great option for making preserved items shelf stable, but keep in mind that water bath canning should only be used for high-acid foods. Low-acid foods require pressure canning in order to make them safe for storage. We also utilize dehydrating for our hot peppers, which then allows us to turn them into powders that we can use year round.

The weather hasn’t been very cooperative this week for the produce cart or the garden, but we are still cruising into end of season activities including late season harvests, cooking and freezing lots of yummy stuff to enjoy in the off season, and planning for next year (never too early to start!).

A big part of the planning process is deciding what to grow. We tend to choose new or unique veggies not readily available in stores, and many of these are “hybrid” varieties like the Black Bear pumpkins in the photo. Hybrid plants are fun to work with because of the opportunity to try something new, and they can provide improved flavor and better disease resistance than the parent plants. When purchasing seeds, if the name states it is an “F1 Hybrid” this indicates the seeds are from the first generation of cross pollination between the parent plants.

One thing to keep in mind with hybrid plants, if you keep the seeds from the fruit to grow the following season, the resulting plants may yield fruits that more closely resemble one of the original parent plants than the new hybrid. If you are looking to grow a hybrid plant of your own, purchase the seeds directly from a reputable seller to ensure you grow exactly what you want!

What a haul from Ciao Bella Farms today! 🌶️🍅🍆🥒
The garden is definitely starting to shift into late-summer mode. Our Lunchbox sweet peppers are finally turning orange, the 4th of July, Costoluto, Flying Saucer, and yellow tomatoes are ripening, and we finally picked our first Fresno chile pepper with plenty more on the way! 🌶️

Today’s harvest also included purple bell peppers, habaneros, Smokin’ Ed’s Scotch Bonnet peppers—packing a potential 100,000–350,000 Scoville units 🔥🔥🔥—purple eggplant, white Paloma eggplant, cucumbers, and a couple more huge cucuzza squash. The cucumbers look like they may be nearing the end of their run, but plenty of other crops are just getting started!

Nothing better than watching the colors of the garden change as everything ripens. ❤️💛💜💚

In addition to the crazy veggies we grow, there is also a wall of sunflowers across the front of the main garden area. This absolute knockout is called a Honey Bear. The stalks are roughly 7 feet tall and grow these big, showy flower heads that have a second layer of petals where the seeds would normally be in the center. We have started cutting stems and adding them for sale on the produce cart. Stop by and grab one today to add a little sunshine in your home!

Our Gold in Gold watermelon is really starting to show off! 🍉💛 This beauty is turning a gorgeous golden-yellow, and it’s just one of many watermelons we have growing right now. The watermelon patch is looking great, and we can’t wait to start harvesting them!

A little comeback story from Ciao Bella Farms! 🌿🌶️

On the right, our habanero pepper bush is thriving and bringing the heat 🔥, while our Marconi sweet pepper bush on the left is growing strong and loaded with beautiful foliage and nice peppers.

But the star of the picture might be our Bordeaux fig tree in the middle. Last winter it died all the way back to the ground, even after we wrapped it for protection, and we honestly weren’t sure it was going to return. Well… it had other plans! It came roaring back from the roots and is well on its way again. 🌱💪
Gardening definitely keeps you guessing, but seeing plants bounce back like this makes it all worth it!
