New layer 😍 this is from my white americauna I hatched from Pine Mountain Farm Dogs! I’m very excited to have some more blue layers! I plan to test to see what blue genes this girl, my silverudds and legbars have.

Who ferments feed for their chickens?

I started doing it routinely maybe about a month ago. They get fermented feed every 2-3 days. I’ve noticed a lot heavier blooms since I’ve started this!

Just another day in the neighborhood 🫎

This mom and twins have been around the neighborhood since the twins were born!! I have a video of them doing zoomies in our backyard when they were first born!

All the incubators are off and I said I was done hatching for the year but these eggs 👀👀

Yessssss.

Give credit where credit it due. It doesn’t minimize the work you’ve put in.

I honestly will never understand people who try to gate keep.

One thing I wish we talked about more in the breeding world is respecting the work that came before us.

Breeding is so much more than putting two birds together in hopes of making a “pretty” egg.

Behind the birds in your pens are years, sometimes generations, of selection. Breeders who studied their birds, made difficult culling decisions, worked toward a standard, protected certain traits, and dedicated season after season to improving and preserving what they had.

When those genetics reach your farm, you aren’t starting from scratch. You’re being handed a chapter of something that was already being written long before you even got your first bird.

…….

Our job as breeders is to understand the breed behind that egg. To protect its type, health, temperament, function, genetic diversity, and the characteristics that make that breed what it is.

Decades from now, the breeds we love will still exist because generation after generation of breeders cared enough to preserve them — not just reinvent them for what was popular at the moment.

You are only one season in the life of a breed.

Make your season count.

Respect the breeders before you. Preserve what deserves preserving. Improve thoughtfully.
Keep good records. Know the history behind your birds.

And leave the breed better for the breeder who comes after you….

The Owl Beards have been in a temporary run and coop while we waited for the new runs to be built. They’re now in their permanent coop and I’m loving them so much 😍

It’s looking like I have more hens than I originally thought 🤞🤞

Just an update on my cross beak girl. She’s living her best life 🧡
