Found these ladies underneath one of our hive pallets. Had to move two colonies in order to get to them, but wow, that’s a lot of comb! I suspect this is a swarm from two weeks ago that decided to stay unusually close to home. It’s a miracle I even saw them.

Next step, carefully cut the comb out one by one and transfer it into a new box while keeping an eye out for the queen to make sure she gets moved without injury. Without intervention, this colony won’t make it past the summer.

Find the queen! She’s longer and a slightly different color than all of the worker bees.

This is one of our new mite hunter queens, back from her mating flight, and starting to lay eggs in her new colony. It’ll take two months before every bee in the hive is one of her daughters.

Just received a fresh batch of “Missouri Mite Hunter” queen bees to help us fight our number one enemy, the Varroa Destructor Mite. Each cage includes one queen and several attendants making sure she’s fed and cared for. These queens will be introduced through our apiary later today to promote more genetic diversity and the ability to better fight diseases and parasites.

Loading up the truck with another 50 gallons of sugar syrup to feed our newest hungry colonies. New colonies need lots of extra food to raise baby bees and build up their field force. We’ve come a long way from mixing sugar on our kitchen stove, one gallon at a time.

Found these girls “hanging out” next to our apiary in Hillsboro. Spring is officially here. First swarm catch of 2024! They’re now tucked away in a new hive at my home in Wheatlands until I figure out where to put them permanently.

Big Thanks to Hidden View Bed & Breakfast for spotting them!

How much sugar does it take to keep bees alive all winter? A lot more than you’d think! There just aren’t as many fall flowers as there used to be. Don’t just think about the spring when planting your flower beds. Fall flowers matter.

The hot days of August are tough on bees and beekeepers alike. We’ve been hard at work treating all of our colonies for mites and feeding lots of sugar syrup to ensure our fall bees are healthy enough to raise strong winter bees in Sept and Oct.
