Hope Grows

As our founding motivation, we aim to grow beautiful beer that celebrates and strengthens small agriculture. This takes different forms, but the result is the same: when you buy beer from Wheatland Spring, you play a role in sustaining today’s regional ecosystem of small farms, Mom-and-Pop businesses, and agriculture-related organizations.

Going a step further is our Hope Grows project, created to support tomorrow’s small farms.

If you purchased a Hope Grows T-shirt or beer in the last months, thank you! Your purchase directly contributed to Future Harvest - The Chesapeake Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture ‘s Feed the Need program and, along with other donations, helped nearly two dozen regional small farms as their typical sales channels have been upended, while at the same time supplying much needed fresh produce to area food banks for our fellow community members.

From their press release: “Future Harvest is pleased to announce its 22 grant awardees from the Feed the Need fund that raised more than $40,000 for the farming community in the Chesapeake region to address food access in our communities. We are also proud to have selected 14 Black, Indigenous, and other farmers of color out of the 22 grantees, as part of our commitment to racial equity. A review committee composed of Future Harvest Board members, staff, and farmers selected this first round of grant awardees from a pool of 102 applicants with funding requests totaling more than $300,000.”

Looking further ahead as we’ve tapped a new batch of Hope Grows, all proceeds from every T-shirt sold and a portion of the proceeds from every beer sold will be given to Future Harvest’s successful Beginner Farmer Training Program. This program is a 12 month, immersive training experience marrying theoretical classroom curriculum with practical experience in the field, literally, with some of the region’s leading sustainable farmers.

Thank you for supporting small farms across our region!

45% Virginia grain; 55% single-origin Bavarian grain
Tasting Notes: Graham cracker, mild herb, Noble Hop

Clean, crisp, and malt focused, Servus is a balanced pale lager brewed with a blend of Virginia grown Pilsner and single-origin Bavarian barley. Patient lagering expresses delicate malt forward flavor with tempered sweetness and just enough noble hop character to stay within balance.

Features single-origin Bavarian grain via our friends at Epiphany Craft Malt and regional grain from our buddies at Murphy & Rude Malting Co.

We know it’s Monday and all, but we’re sailin’ into Wednesday excited to release our fresh batch of Getaway Gose! It’s Baaaa-aaack! Wanna Getaway with us? Table reservations on our website or you can opt for a chance at first come, first served tables.

Gose with Tangerine + Gooseberry 5.1%
48% Estate grown; 58% Virginia grain; 100% Regional grain
Tasting Notes: Tangerine, Tart, Ocean Air, Summer days, Escape

Travel can take us away and bring us closer to where we want to be. Sometimes when it’s not possible, the illusion is enough to get us there. In this spirit, Getaway offers a vacation in a glass. Soured naturally with house-cultured lactobacillus and fermented with a fruity ale strain, our Gose is brewed with a foundation of Wheatland Spring Estate-grown malted and raw wheat, along with Maryland-grown Pilsner malt and a dash of Triticale. During fermentation, a blend of Tangerine and Gooseberry was added to give refreshing citrus and tart undertones to support the classic additions of sea salt and coriander.

Estate Land Beer from Wheatland Spring is on the horizon...

Come join us in celebrating last month’s estate barley harvest as we continue our work preparing these new grains for malting. To mark the successful harvest, this week we‘re offering draft pours of On A Day Like Today, our puncheon-aged, mixed grain, Brett Saison, for the first time. A cold beer made for the farm is perfect On A Day Like Today.

We’ve just finished our crop rotations to keep the soil healthy and ready for planting more grain, including those cover crops that will feed our bee colonies during the summer.

On a long enough timescale, it seems that all beauty is ephemeral. We reflect on instances of beauty as a snapshot in time of an emotion, a view, a smell, a taste, a feeling. A captured moment.

Available today on the farm on draft and in bottles 12-8pm.

In the summer of 2019, Ocelot Brewing Company and Wheatland Spring set out to highlight the quality, uniqueness, and agricultural expression of our farm and region’s grains through individual points of view, yielding two different interpretations. As conceived, the beers were to channel the intention of the two places, imparting each brewery’s approach on the beer they made, using the same grain as our shared foundation.

The first iteration of this collaboration was Sun Hands, a delightful, mixed-grain IPA brewed at Ocelot.

Both beers were brewed days apart in 2019 and we’re now happy to offer the second interpretation: Captured Moment. This Wild Golden Ale is a reflection of a day on our farm and the time shared with friends creating this beer.

Captured Moment spent an evening in the fall of 2019 open-air cooling and mingling with Loudoun-grown, whole leaf Chinook hops in our barn loft Coolship. We then sent the ale into Loudoun wine barrels to be further inoculated with our wild-captured native yeast cultures from our grain fields. After more than half a year of fermentation and maturation, the barrels were blended for bottle conditioning.

Some of the most beautiful things are also the most temporary. Maybe it has to be that way. Captured Moment is our attempt to reflect the beauty our farm and agricultural region offered us one day, in celebration with friends.

Available today on the farm.

There are few simple pleasures that compare to a Hefeweizen in a sun-drenched Biergarten. Knowing the wheat for this beer grows in the fields next to our Biergarten with the same sunshine makes us smile all the more.

Beer is an agricultural product and it has the capacity to reflect the agricultural character of the farm, surroundings, and growing region where the ingredients are harvested and processed. We’re focused on making the highest quality beer possible, so our approach is to grow on our farm the finest ingredients we can and carefully source the remainder from trusted farmers and partners. The result is beer that reflects the character of the land it comes from. We call this Land Beer. Our approach to Land Beer follows the German Landbier tradition with a strong regional agricultural focus and artisanal heritage.

We’ve watched the sun rise over our field often, but it still leaves us with a sense of wonder every time. For us, finding wonder in the familiar today gives us promise for what’s to come tomorrow. This is the spirit of Fieldrise IPA, a lush and layered expression of hops, built on a burly foundation of all-regional grain. This includes Estate-grown Wheat, Virginia-grown Pale and 6-Row, along with Maryland-grown Pilsner. While the ingredients may be familiar, their combined expression is anything but. A bouquet of hop aromatics and soft mouthfeel give way to a flood of hop character, thanks to massive charges of Cascade and Chinook in the kettle and whirlpool. Double dry-hopping with Chinook and Idaho 7 provides further depth and dank earthiness to an already citrus-juicy hop bonanza.

Available on-draft on the farm starting Wednesday at noon. Available in cans to-go starting Thursday on the farm at 4pm. You are able to order cans on the website now for pick-up Thursday and this weekend: wheatlandspring.com

Please share with your local small farm! Applications for Feed the Need grants closing soon!

The Hope Grows project was created to support tomorrow’s small farms, today. (Check out our website for more on Hope Grows.)

Contributions from Hope Grows will be directly put to work in two ways:

Supporting farmers today by purchasing their excess produce, which is then given to area food banks through a fund called: Feed the Need. (Small farms apply today!)

Supporting farmers tomorrow through the successful Beginner Farmer Training Program. (More on this soon!)

Is your farm able to provide fresh produce, eggs, meats, and/or dairy to your local food bank or an organization distributing food to those in need? Apply for a #FeedTheNeed Mini-Grant to help cover the costs associated with donations. TWO WEEKS LEFT TO APPLY Learn more at: https://mailchi.mp/futureharvestcasa/applicationdeadlinejuly15

Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery (with on-farm B&B)

Established circa 1832, the historic Wheatland Spring property is nestled among gently rolling hills in the heart of rural Western Loudoun County. Wheatland Spring Farm + Brewery offers guests hand made beers in historic buildings that use ingredients from our farm, neighboring farms, and regional, small scale producers as much as possible.

Wheatland Spring is just an hour outside of Washington, DC, but a visit will return guests to the pace of life from decades ago. Named for the natural spring on the property, Wheatland Spring is situated on 30 acres of bucolic Virginia farmland with a number of outbuildings, including a cottage house, spring house, bank barn, and corn crib.
