Nothing like seeing $50 fly away 🤦🏻‍♀️🥴🤣. This was a purchased, marked queen. When I make a split I take the old queen out and introduce a caged queen. A few days later you are supposed to go uncork one end and the bees eat the sugar plug to release her gradually. I messed this cork up so I was just going to release her all the way. But she had the nerve to just fly away!! Hopefully she comes back 🤞🏼 I won’t be getting any beekeeper of the year awards!!

It’s the season to have live bees in your kitchen. Just picked these Queens up from and will be making some splits this weekend!

If any of my friends are interested I will have a couple nucs available for sale. Nucs are basic a mini colony that gets you started in beekeeping!

The girls are looking good coming out of winter! Of course every beekeeper wants to keep losses to a minimum… but this also poses a different problem.. all surviving colonies are going to have the urge to swarm. They are well established, growing by the day and will quickly feel cramped in their existing hive. When the bees swarm on their own, they take roughly half of the resources with them, half of the foraging community, and the queen. This can leave a hive “weak” during the start of the honey flow- which is the opposite of what a honey producer wants! So over the next week I am going to have to figure out what methods I am going to employ that mimic a swarm, or actually split these 11 existing colonies into more hives.. which I don’t really want at the moment! I’m thankful for a great winter- and am looking forward to the season!!

I didn’t get to check in on the girls to the extent I wanted to today, but I did sit at the entrance of each hive and observe. We actually have an abundant amount of pollen throughout most of the year here in the Midwest. You can see the girls (yes- all girls for now) packed with pollen as they land. This tells me that this is their hive and that they aren’t robbing resources… they only bring the good stuff into their own homes. Cannot wait until spring 2026!

Sorry to announce that I will not be at the market up town tomorrow! However- I WILL have honey and Elderberry Syrup available for pickup tomorrow! Just message me, or comment below and I will meet you in town! I Am working on my new location- 120 N. Main Street ( The old Rooted Flower Bar) and will have all of my products available here in time for holiday shopping!!

I had a wild weekend of making soaps 🤣Looking forward to the Monroe County IL Farmers Market this upcoming Saturday! I will have honey and elderberry available as well as tallow balm, tallow soap, and tallow lip balm!!

Checked on the girls today. So far everyone is looking good going into winter. A couple of the hives are a little light so I’ll make up some feed this week and throw it on. I’ve never had honey still on the hives this late, but it was crazy to be pulling supers in November and sweating!
