The goats are transitioning to being outside during the day and they are NOT HAPPY!!!!

It’s ok for them to be uncomfortable - dew on their hooves, out in a big open space, and lots of lush grass but little browse (goats actually eat weeds, not grass).

The dew dries. They have climbing toys to lounge on. They have hay for roughage. It’s time to be outdoors and soak up the sun!

April 19 was Gabby’s 1st birthday; how could I have missed posting this saucy calico gal on her day?

Gabby loves to curl up with the dogs (when stretching over my shoulder isn’t available), never misses a chance to nap on a heated blanket, and would trade me for a churu - but I wouldn’t trade her for the world!

Celebrating Thunder on his 18th birthday!

He’s a typical pony - naughty, devious, and he’d trade me in a heartbeat for a cookie.

What I didn’t expect when he came into my life - he LOVES to learn! He does every trick I could think of (earning him the nickname “Circus Pony”), carries a pack, drives, lunges, does in-hand trail, and jumps in hand.

The average lifespan for a mini is 25-35 years with the oldest recorded minis living over 50 years!

Thunder’s in great health, besides for a disease called Cushings (which he’s medicated for), so I hope we have many more years together!

Caz loves to roll in his sawdust! This time of year, horses are shedding which makes them itchy and more likely to roll to scratch their itches.

Yesterday was a rough day. I had to say goodbye to Tonks.

Her condition had deteriorated and the vet had no expectation that continuing to attempt to treat her would lead to any healing.

Sometimes the kindest thing we can do for an animal is to let them go. It does not mean she won’t be missed. This video is how I want to remember her - whole, happy, and munching on a favorite treat (parsley).

Did you know after the winter horses have to be acclimatized to eating grass again?

Spring grass is high in sugar and these 2 would eat until they got a bellyache - called colic in horses - which is very severe and sometimes even deadly because a horse can’t vomit.

Eating spring grass can also cause a horse to founder and it’s not good for Thunder (black pony) because he has Cushing’s disease so he’s only on grass with a lead line or muzzle on.

Loving the beautiful spring weather!!! Thunder was excited to show me he still remembers his voice cues for his paces. I love this little pony and how smart he is!

Tonks eating on her own!

Tonks came home from the vet yesterday after being found Sunday morning with wry neck.

She’s on medicines to continue to reverse the head tilt which make her feel yucky, so she has to be forced to fed to keep her gut moving. The biggest indicator of her being out of the woods is her appetite returning.

Tonks is home from the vet!

She was found Sunday morning with wry neck and has been hospitalized Monday-today as she could not stand, walk, or eat/drink on her own. She’s not eating on her own, but she can drink, her nystagmus (eye flicking) is gone, and she’s wobbly but ambulatory.

The plan now is to continue the medicines that have been helping her, get her eating on her own, and give her body time to heal.

Dinner with the boys!

Both ponies get hoof supplement and a ration balancer each night to ensure they’re getting all their vitamins and minerals. They also have access to 4 different salt blocks (pure salt, multi mineral, Himalayan salt, and selenium) so they can choose to increase their mineral intake if they’d like.
