Some hard truths for goat breeders. Especially new ones. I keep seeing the same s**t over and over. This is nothing new folks. I get it. It’s summer. We are all hot, tired and pissy.

1. The market is cyclical. what goes up must come down. What goes down must come up. You either stick with it, or you quit.

2. You will lose money. Probably for several years at the beginning. We are all one bad drought or one bad vet bill or one dead tractor away from losing $$ or having to sell something beloved to make ends meet.

3. Yes. I know you paid $2000 for that kid. You will not get $2000 for his offspring, you probably won’t even get $1000 for his offspring. Your herdname is brand new. No one has ever heard of it. You are not proven. You don’t have a line. You are breeding 2 big name goats together and hoping for the best. Sometimes it works. Oftentimes it doesn’t.

4. Rome was not built in a day. Neither will your herd be. It will take YEARS. Decades. More $$, blood, sweat and tears than you can imagine. You will f**k up and lose entire years worth of does because the buck you picked didn’t work and you had to back track. That doesn’t mean you sell his daughters to some newbie. It means you pull their papers and sell as pets or eat them.

5. Your herdname means everything.

6. Never, ever forget there is a human who loves that animal. People will ask you to critique their goats. Be honest but be kind. Every goat has one good attribute you can pick out. If you cannot do that politely decline to give your opinion (y’all wouldn’t believe who taught me that).

7. The pet market exists because of us. Because most of us don’t have the balls to eat our own goats. So what to do with culls? Pull papers and sell as pets. IF you are not a terminal herd you are contributing to the pet trade. Do not sell them on one hand and look down your nose with the other. The pet market is not your market until you need them and 99% of us will need them at some point. if the pet trade is stealing your sales look to your own herd to figure out the problem.

8. Goats are versatile animals. Nigerians in particular. People breed them for different reasons with different goals. The breeder of 30+ years is at a different place with their herd than the breeder of 10 years. Some people enjoy milk test, some people enjoy showing, some people enjoy homesteading. Some people just enjoy cute little goats. There is nothing wrong with any of these goals. I promise your goals will change with the years. I guarantee it. Don’t belittle people with different goals who are in a different place than you. There is no wrong reason to keep goats.

9. Goat breeding is HARD. You will bury your best friends and your greatest accomplishments. This part does not get easier. Ever.

10. Be kind damn it. It doesn’t cost a thing.

HOW MUCH FOR A GOAT?

Let me say a few words to you, yes you, the person who sends a text to just ask for the price. The person who calls and hears the price and says “I can buy a cheaper goat somewhere else”. I'll talk to you too; the person who doesn't care about papers because I want “just a pet and milk goat to raise”.

No registered goat is “just a pet and milk goat”.

Behind every purebred goat is a BREEDER. I use capital letters to distinguish a breeder from an animal factory for lack of a better word. A serious breeder does not breed goats without documents that protect the integrity of the breed.

Registration papers are records of ancestry documenting the bloodline and enabling you to investigate possible health problems in your lineage.

When you tell a breeder you don't care about the papers, just tell them you don't care about the goats’s health, you just want the cheapest thing you can find!

If you choose to buy a goat from a reputable and quality breeder, this breeder is responsible for every goat’s health.

This breeder will skip vacations, miss sleep, and most of their personal time is dedicated to their goats and their well being. The truly passionate breeder, who loves what they breed, puts all of their time into it. Not only for goats that are sold, but also for every customer who owns a piece of their heart and is now a member of their large family.

A breeder will get his/her hands dirty, often covered in everything that comes with birth. Because that's what life is all about... in the midst of birth and death is life. The wheel that keeps spinning. A breeder conducts ultrasounds, analytics, emergency vet calls, vaccinations, registrations, researches pedigrees, deworming, hoof trims and provides the base start for the future of the goat in handling, milking and showing.

Last but not least, a breeder CHOOSES the family who is lucky enough to have one of their goats. Yes, you read correctly.

A real breeder chooses who they sell to.
There really is no compensation that can offset the investment a breeder has made.

A good breeder has other criteria for those who want to continue their bloodline, why? Because breeding isn't a responsibility to take lightly, it's a lifestyle choice reserved ONLY for the few devoted people willing to sacrifice.

Since a goat is never “just a pet” he/she is the legacy of the breeder, a little boy’s best friend, a caretaker of a little girl, therapy for the elderly, a member of the family, someone's whole world!

Worth sharing with so much truth in this article. Responsible breeding and possession of many goats is a lifestyle and commitment many cannot understand.

It’s just a goat....

From time to time, people say, “that’s a lot of money for “just a goat.”

They don’t understand the distances traveled, the time spent in the barn, or the costs involved for “just a goat.”

Some of my proudest moments are with “just a goat.”

Many hours have passed in the barn and my only company was “just a goat,” & I was happy!

Some of my saddest moments have been with “just a goat,” and some of those were tough.

“Just a goat” brings my life pure happiness & joy!

“Just a goat” brings out the compassion and patience in me.

Because of “just a goat” I rise early, head to the barn and enjoy every minute of it!

So for me it’s not “just a goat” but something that brings me great joy & gratitude for the life I have!

“Just a goat” brings out what’s good in me and takes my mind from the worries of the day.

I hope someday that you understand that it’s not “just a goat” but the thing that gives me peace!

So the next time you hear the phrase “it’s just a goat,” just smile, because they “just don’t understand.” 🥰❤️🐐
