The Simply Crazy Farm Life Follow along as I give insight to life of a small Wisconsin dairy farm raising cows, crops and kids To God be the glory, always. Faith. Family. Farming.

James and Rachel McManama are a father- daughter team that manage a dairy and cash crop farm located right outside of Watertown, WI. We currently milk 80 Holstein cows in our 16-stall stanchion barn. In September 2011 we finished construction of our 80-stall freestall barn, where our cows are housed comfortably on sand bedding with a lot of feed access. In addition to dairy farming, we also raise

nearly 500 acres of crops that we sell to local cooperatives, which include corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa. We use the alfalfa and corn to feed our animals, and we use the wheat straw for bedding. We have been extremely blessed to be able to surpass large goals we have set for this farm. We are simple farmers, who don't believe in flashy equipment or the most beautiful registered show cows. We want to promote agriculture, take care of the land we have been given, and make a living doing what we love.

Because we are never going to stop talking about which beef is “healthier” for you (buying from a grocery store v direct from your local farmer).. It’s so important to know that ALL beef is safe, healthy, and produced by a farmer who truly cares about their animals and the sustainability of their land!

There are lots of things that affect the color of ground beef. This post shows some of the big ones. Muscle is dynamic and the color can be affected by so many factors from the age and feeding of the animal, to the packaging, storage conditions such as temperature, the amount of lean in the grind, whether or not its beef frozen, and many more. And this is just fresh beef. Color in processed meat and cooked foods can be even more complicated. I find it very interesting and we've conducted several studies on ground beef color in our lab.

Just remember that beef color is not simple and can be affected by many factors. Certain posts that are making the rounds on social media are trying to claim that one package of beef is superior to another because of its origin and its color. They make claims about preservatives and safety that are not true.

All of this with a one group feed and a 60 somatic cell count (which is the level of white blood cells in the milk that show how healthy the cow is. Anything under 100 is phenomenal.. 60 is just 🤯)
Reaching milestones we never thought possible.
All of this proves we have the best professional team that consists of our vet, nutritionist, Gale from Semex who picks out what he anticipates will be the best genetics for the future of our herd, our agronomist..
And above all the great team of people we have that takes care of these cows so well. 🙏
Thankful always, with my heart and *almost* my bulk tank overflowing!
