White clover will continue to bloom throughout the summer and into the middle of September. White Clover honey from our region is some of the finest honey in the world and our region is jammed with these little blossoms. Military Members explore Beekeeping at Churchill Farms Honey

In collaboration with Jefferson County Cornell Cooperative Extension, Churchill Farms Honey hosted 2 events for military service members through their Farms Ops program. Farm Ops assists Veterans and Military Service Members (to include active duty, reservists, National Guard and transitioning) in exploring potential careers in agriculture. On Monday May 24, a group of military service members came to the farm for an educational forum outlining beekeeping equipment, the process for beginners to participate in beekeeping, basic management techniques, and then a hands on segment working with the bees at the farm. Subsequently, on Monday June 14, 2021 Churchill Farms hosted a “Work Party” which was attended by several Military personnel who wanted to assist with some beekeeping basics and the team was charged with the task of assembling multiple bee boxes or “supers.” Many also assembled the frames that go into the hives to be placed on colonies. Both sessions were an enjoyable experience and many left with some taste for backyard beekeeping for themselves in the future.
Pictured here are several of the finished hives these participants built as well as the frames within the hives that were placed on the colonies on June 30th. RGC2

In Northern New York one of the first significant flower and nectar sources for honeybees is the dandelion. This first early crop of nectar from the dandelion is gathered by the honey bees and is immediately fed to the growing baby bees or larvae in the hives to grow the population of the colonies. Dandilion honey is rarely stored in the combs because it is consumed by the new growing bees. Basswood, thornapple, cherry and various other blossoms will follow to "grow" the colonies. By July the population of the colony will be about 50,000 to 100,000. Homeowners are encouraged to let the dandelions fully bloom before mowing them and also consider planting various groundcover blooms to assist in feeding the bees the entire season. An easy project would be just to plant an area of wildflower seeds to an area of your property.

Save the bees! Please share! RGC2

The nation's weather during early spring has raised havoc with the honeybee population and replacing the winter loss of colonies in the northern states this year. Northern beekeepers are accustomed to winter loss of their bees from sub-zero winter conditions for prolonged periods. This is normal. We northern states beekeepers generally replace our lost colonies by purchasing nucleus or "nucs" (little beehives) from southern commercial beekeepers. Unfortunately, our strange winter pattern in areas like Texas, Louisianna, Mississippi, Alabama, and northern parts of Florida were harsh conditions for the southern commercial beekeepers as well. They were unable to produce as many needed replacement colonies as last year. This IS going to lead to a decline in overall bee populations in most northern states, especially Minesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Northern New York to mention a few. In the long haul with less overall colonies to produce honey for consumers I feel the price of honey will increase dramatically for consumers. Some scientists and entomologists are predicting there will not be enough honeybees to polinate vital crops as well. This is not good news to hear for this backyard beekeeper. RGC2

The Legend of CC Hardy

My father Raymond Churchill learned beekeeping from his uncle Charles Carol Hardy (aka CC Hardy).

CC Hardy’s bees were originally located on East Gotham Road also known as Hardy road right here in Burrville. My father always told me CCs spirit was about the homestead and in the beeyard while I was growing up. Whenever footsteps were heard in the honey barns or some unexplained phenomenon happened, Dad would say (CC is up to his shenanigans again). It was a spooky but interesting tale and I smiled when things happened. This legend remains with me till this day.

Every Halloween CCs sprit seems to appear at dusk in the shadows of the bee yard as he works the bees. You can smell the smoke from his bee smoker. Wearing his white coveralls and bee veil you can sometimes make out his outline but you can sense his presence and his love for the bees!

Come and experience the tale of CC hardy and pick up some of our award winning honey while you are here. Perhaps you will get a glance at CC Hardy working the bees or sitting next to our stand!
