My brother Chris sent me this message this morning: "Yesterday Dad sprayed, helped with chores, Tedded hay, chopped 7 loads of haylage, baled 2 loads of dry hay, planted 10 acres of soybeans. I worked 10 acres twice, raked hay, unloaded 7 chopped loads, unloaded the 2 baled loads, and then stacked it.. one of the weirdest days ever. I unhooked from the disc took the duels off and hooked onto the baler. That's a first for us!"

We plant soybean, oats, corn, alfalfa, timothy, and brome grass. We put up corn silage, high moisture corn, ear corn, oats and roast the soybeans. We make our grain(cow and heifer grain) using the ear corn, oats, soybeans and we add a distiller mix as well as other minerals. We use and sell straw from the oats. We put up a lot of dry hay square and round bales, 1st, 2nd and 3rd cut. We also put up haylage for the milking cows.

Her 2nd dam Chelle was our 1st home bred EX and her 3rd dam Beauty was our 1st cow to go EX for us. Sonya's 9th dam, a cow named Wh**ey, was born in 1948. She purchased in 1952 and was one of the 1st two registered cows my grand father owned when he started farming!

Our beloved Sonya was laid to rest on March 9th around 2:30pm. The barn won't be the same without her. We bought and moved to our current farm in 1990 and Sonya was born in 1993. I was 8 years old and my bother 4 years old so us growing up she was always around. I remember when she was born, her crazy mother Shannon had her out in the back field and she was a wild little baby.

Any normal cow when feeding they get excited and may throw their head around or what not however Sonya was different.. Right before you put her grain down she would hold her head off to the side a couple inches off the floor, ready! Ready for the grain then once it hits the floor in a quick motion with her mouth and tongue she ate it up like a vacuum! She also chewed her cud faster then any cow I had ever seen before, twice as fast as normal cows!

When Sonya was eight she calved she got milk fever in the night and my Mom (Sally) found her in the morning stuck laying on her head, was a close call! As she got older we could not let her out during the day with the rest of the cows because she wanted to be one of the first ones in. In her mind she could do it but her body.. we were worried some young two year old may slam into her and she might get hurt. So she would go out at night mostly or with another old/calm cow during the day.

Now we did show her and of course she was always clipped for scoring however she always hated classifying, bagging, clipping, showing, and most of all the wash rack!! And even up to the last day she was milked in December you could Not touch her leg, she would give you a kick! She had her rules! Sonya was around 18 years old when she finally "allowed" Sally to touch her face and eventually was able to give her a hug.

She did not have her first heifer until she was 11 years old! We had even tried flushing her a few times and got one egg, one bull. Luckily she ended up having three heifers total. Two back to back and the last one when she was 17-05! The sire of the two heifers was Windsor, he was not a great cross but we had a lot of heifers from him and we were desperate! Her youngest daughter is [email protected] has an 6/14 Armani heifer and due again in July to Armani. The other two were both VG but one was lost due to a leg injury and the other was lost after her second calving. One of the daughters did have a heifer by Fortune that scored VG-88 EX-MS and she has a 6/13 Lauthority due this summer and a beautiful Lheros 2 year old milking (due to Gold Chip in September). Sonya also has great grand daughters by Larson, Sanchez, Bolton, and Pronto. And a fancy great great grand daughter by Destry who is due in May!

Sonya was an amazing working cow with a more amazing personality. Seeing her smiling face when we would enter the barn was a great way to start your day. We were lucky to have her in our lives, so many people knew her and she will be missed more then words can explain. The barn will feel empty after her in our milking barn for 19 and a half years.

Sonya and Farrah are both by Tesk and their Dams were full sisters by Starbuck.
Ashlie's dam had over 200,000lbs and Ashlie also had a 92pt daughter make 220,000lbs of milk.
And last but not least Kari, She became a great brood cow! She had 4EX&2VG natural daughters and all of the cows that's name starts with a "K" or a "I" goes back to her!
