Our small family business was born from the need to find a way to help improve the skin health of our two youngest children. They both navigate life with many food allergies, asthma, and severe eczema. We had spent years trying all the hypoallergenic over-the-counter moisturizers with little to no improvement. With a combined 20-year background in healthcare and cosmetology, this Mama got to work! What is tallow? Tallow is put simply rendered animal fat, most commonly from beef. It contains all the same vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that our skin has, making it the most biologically compatible with us. It truly is a super skin food! I source my suet from a local butcher and process it to produce my own tallow for all the skincare products I make, for the highest quality possible. We found that the beef tallow skincare products I was making were gentle, soothing, and a game changer when added to their skincare routine. They do not fix the eczema, but where the MOST helpful and moisturizing for them. We started selling our skincare 3 years ago to help others with super sensitive skin, and to help bring back the use of tallow! We began selling at 1 market per week, and now you can find us at 33 stores throughout the states. Our logo is a heritage breed turkey, which I get questions about often! It simply stands for traditional ways and ingredients. Which is fitting since tallow has been used since ancient times but was left behind during the industrial revolution when goods became mass produced for as cheap as possible and ingredient quality has continually become poorer ever since. It truly is a family business! Each jar of lotion is hand piped, each soap hand cut, and all formulated simply and with purpose. All the kids help in various ways including labeling, marketing, sorting, and helping at events and farmers markets throughout the year. The best part is hearing from a customer that their skin or their child's skin has improved! It's just close to my heart, because I have been THAT parent before. Searching and trying anything to help make their baby's skin a "little happier". We also produce small amounts of organically grown garlic, lamb and poultry meat on our tiny farm.

Something I’ve been thinking about lately as a small skincare business owner…....
Certifications can be important in the skincare world, especially when it comes to “clean beauty.” They can help consumers feel more confident about the products they’re buying. But after looking into obtaining some of these certifications myself, I was honestly surprised by the process.

Some require $800–$2,000 upfront, non-refundable, just to begin reviewing your recipes and ingredients.

And honestly? After looking into it, I’ve decided these certifications just aren’t worth that investment for my small business.

Here’s the thing: just like big businesses, certification organizations have their own definitions of what qualifies as “clean” and “natural.” And those definitions can look vastly different from mine — and probably yours, too!

At the end of the day, I believe it’s important to look beyond a label or a certification and actually pay attention to what’s in the products you’re using.

So, with that being said, I’m going to keep doing what I do best. ❤️

I’ll keep rendering real tallow, sourcing high-quality oils and ingredients, keeping my formulas simple, and making products with everyday people and their skin in mind.

I may not have fancy clean beauty awards displayed on my products, but I stand behind every ingredient I use and the care that goes into making each one.

Because clean beauty isn’t about the certifications your brand has. It’s about what’s actually in the jar.
And that’s something I’ll always stand behind.

Just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself to all the new faces around here! 🤎 Since so much of what I share is behind-the-scenes reels and product-making, I thought it was time to share a little more about the person behind Heritage Homestead Co.

I’m Megan, the mama behind this little family-run, Maine-made business!

Heritage Homestead Co. started in 2021 out of a very real need in our own family. I was searching for simple, effective skincare for my children, who struggled with food allergies, sensitive skin, and severe eczema. After trying so many products that just didn’t work for us, I started experimenting with grass-fed beef tallow. It made such a difference in our family's routine that I wanted to share what I was making with other families, too. 🌿

Our family's experience with food allergies is also a big reason why we work so hard to keep our products top 9 allergen-friendly and leave sunflower oil out of our formulations. I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to read ingredient labels and try to find products that work for your family. While everyone's sensitivities are different, making thoughtful ingredient choices is something that's incredibly important to us.

What started as a family need has grown into so much more than I ever imagined! Today, I make everything in small batches, including rendering our own grass-fed beef tallow right here in-house. From tallow body butters and balms to soaps, candles made with Maine beeswax, and even natural hair care, I'm always dreaming up something new!

My background is in cosmetology, along with my medical background, so creating thoughtfully formulated products has become a true passion of mine. I love finding ways to keep things simple, use quality ingredients, and leave out the unnecessary extras.

We're still a small family business, and there's a whole lot of making, labeling, packing, planning, and dreaming that goes on behind the scenes. 😂

I'm so grateful that something created out of a need in our own home has found its way into so many of yours. Thank you for being here, supporting our little Maine business, and allowing us to do what we love!

What started with finding products that worked for our own family has grown into Heritage Homestead Co., where I get to create simple, nourishing tallow body care for so many other families, too. And I’m always dreaming up something new!

When your skin barrier becomes compromised, your skin has a harder time holding onto moisture. This can leave skin feeling dry, tight, rough, or more easily irritated.
Tallow makes an excellent moisturizer because its fatty acid profile is similar to some of the lipids naturally found in our skin. It helps soften the skin while creating a protective layer that helps reduce moisture loss.
This is why I believe simple moisturizing and clean cleansing are the building blocks of healthy skin.
When the skin is already struggling, sometimes adding more products and more ingredients isn't the answer. Sometimes it needs gentle cleansing, simple moisture, and a little time.
Tallow isn't a cure for skin conditions, and everyone's skin is different. But for dry, sensitive skin, it can be a wonderful, simple moisturizer to have in your routine.

🌿 Tallow & Manuka Honey Balm
A richer, more concentrated balm made for targeted areas that need a little extra care and protection. It’s packed with tallow, Manuka honey, beeswax, and a blend of botanical oils and essential oils.

Think of it this way:

Just getting back from the Freeport Fall Festival, and what a few week it’s been! 🍂💛
Two festivals back-to-back, lots of long days, hard work, and so many wonderful people supporting our small family business. After 5 years in business, I can honestly say this has been the best year yet! 🥹✨

So, naturally, I decided to celebrate with something special for this tallow lady — a beautiful new market bag! 💛
