FROM 3D SCAN TO FINAL INSTALL
Pretty exciting to see this project finally come together.
We installed our custom tank mounts on a new Case IH 715 Quadtrac, designed to carry 300 gallons on each side. Heavy-duty construction with ½” plate tied into 1” mounting points, but still a clean, streamlined finished product.
This project also gave us a chance to keep dialing in our 3D scanning and design capabilities—scan the tractor, design around the actual geometry, fabricate the parts, and see how everything fits at final installation.
The install went great.
And the 715 itself is just an impressive machine—the massive radiator shown in the video gives you some perspective on the scale of this tractor.
Scan it. Design it. Build it. Install it.

WHEN STANDARD PIPE ISN’T THE RIGHT SIZE
A unique project going through the shop for Pipkin Construction and the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery.
These fish-transfer pipe spools needed to match an existing system—so standard pipe wasn’t going to work. We custom rolled the shells to approximately 32¼” OD, then fabricated the flanged assemblies to fit the application.
Having plate-rolling capability in-house gives us the ability to build diameters that simply aren’t sitting on a pipe rack.
We can roll plate up to 5/8” thick × 5’ wide in-house, opening up some pretty interesting possibilities for custom pipe, cylinders, tanks, and other rolled fabrications.
If the right size doesn’t exist, sometimes you just make it.

WHEN YOU CAN’T BUY THE PART… MAKE IT.
This is the kind of work we love.
A piece of equipment for the City of Chelan needed a worm gear. The equipment is valuable, but the replacement part simply isn’t available.
So our machinist made one.
He manually sharpened his own cutting tool to match the gear profile and machined a replacement from scratch.
That’s more than making a part. That’s solving a real-world problem and creating real value.
Having people with the experience, creativity, and willingness to tackle something unusual gives us capabilities that aren’t available everywhere.
Can’t buy it? Maybe we can make it.

THE BEST TOOL IN THE SHOP IS A THINKING TEAM
One of our guys recently built a simple jig fixture that solved multiple problems at once—including eliminating the need for a separate inspection step.
That’s the kind of improvement we love to celebrate.
Every morning, we spend time learning about the 8 Wastes of Lean, manufacturing principles, leadership, and how to see problems differently. But the goal isn’t just to learn Lean terminology.
The goal is to develop people who think.
People who take ownership. People who see wasted motion and wasted potential. People who ask, “Why are we doing it this way?” And then build a better way.
A simple fixture might not look revolutionary, but when someone on the floor recognizes a problem, takes responsibility, and eliminates multiple forms of waste with one idea—that’s continuous improvement becoming culture.
Don’t just improve the process. Develop the people who improve the process.

WHEN HEAVY STRAW BECOMES THE PROBLEM
Heavy residue has always been one of the challenges with John Deere HZ drills—and tough Piranha straw can make that challenge even bigger.
This footage is from previous seasons running our HZ on 14-inch spacing, using a coil packer ahead of the drill and our Rotary Straw Movers to help manage the residue.
These straw movers have saved our bacon more than once.
We’ve continued to revise and improve the design over the years, learning from what actually works in the field.
If you’re fighting heavy straw, plugging, and residue that just won’t flow through the drill, this might be a simple solution worth looking at.
Move the straw. Keep the drill moving.

ALL THE WAY FROM AUSTRALIA
A pretty exciting arrival at Barnes Welding.
We just unloaded an Eagle seeding bar from a shipping container all the way from Australia.
Now comes the fun part—putting it together and getting it into the field.
As the U.S. distributor for Eagle Seeding Bars, we’re excited to bring another no-till option to American farmers and see what this machine can do in our conditions.
Another option. Another way to improve.

WHEN A TEAM MOVES AS ONE
Today our team rallied together to 3S one of our fabrication bays—Sort. Sweep. Standardize.
Six people working side-by-side, getting the space ready for our new Eagle Seeding Bar arriving from Australia.
There’s something powerful about watching a group stop thinking about “my job” and start thinking about “our goal.”
Different people. Different strengths. One purpose.
Unity turns individual effort into something bigger.

CAN 3D PRINTING MAKE SMALL-BATCH MANUFACTURING AFFORDABLE?
Small production runs can be tough to justify when traditional tooling costs more than the parts.
So what if we just print the tooling?
For these stainless fertilizer tubes, we 3D printed a custom press die that formed three bends in one operation. Our first set produced about 40 parts before wearing out—and we learned how to make the next set even better.
For small batches, maybe tooling doesn’t need to last forever.
What if it only needs to last as long as the job?
Design. Print. Produce. Improve.

CAUGHT LOUNGING ON THE JOB…
I walked into the shop and found Tell sitting next to the burn table, feet up, talking on the phone.
Looked pretty suspicious.
Turns out he was on the phone with Hypertherm tech support, working through an issue with our controller and figuring out how to update the system.
And that’s exactly the kind of “lounging around” we want to see.
Because the goal isn’t just to fix today’s problem. It’s to learn from it and build a process that keeps the problem from creating downtime tomorrow.
Sometimes the most productive guy in the shop is the one sitting still, thinking ahead.

35 YEARS OF CRAFTSMANSHIP
Pretty special day at Barnes Welding.
My dad received a package from the American Welding Society recognizing 35 years as an AWS member and honoring him with a Lifetime Membership.
A special card and a little pin might not look like much—but they represent 35 years of commitment to a trade, continuous learning, craftsmanship, and doing the job right.
For our family and our team, that means a lot.
So much of what we know today was built on the experience, hard work, and knowledge passed down by the generation before us.
Congratulations, Dad. 35 years well earned.
