Remember her? Probably not and that's understandable cause AGF Majita isn't exactly the kinda cow that would grace the cover of Angus Journal. Back in early May I posted a picture of Majita posing with this year's first calf of the season. Here she is with the first calf born last season. In fact, she's always near the top of the pack. Coincidence, or maternal goodness? I think that her pedigree supports the latter.

The real reason that I dug up this dated picture of Majita, besides reminding us to not judging a book solely by its cover, was to share a picture of her sire Leavy and his sire, Quinciuis - both around 3 yrs of age in the pictures. Notice any similarities in the hindsides? My theory has always been that the porky pig backsides - something that I very much admire - was an Elimast trait, but I don't remember what put that idea in my head. What say the Ballindalloch experts?

We retrieved this youngster, AGF Colwyn, today from a secret hideaway where he was stashed last year. It wasn't disappointing to see how he has progressed over the past year. His dam is our favorite Cotton cow, though I have to admit that I find all of the short & stretchy bovinas from Cotton Angus Ranch to be pleasing. His sire, Beckton, was our "gotta have him!" pick from several years ago after we saw his daddy (Claws, right, with pasture pal Central, left) at Wye Angus. Unfortunately, we lost Beckton to injury when he was coming into his prime as a three year old but we're happy to have this son to carry on the goodness.

This magic elixir is available at a walnut grove near you... but hurry before the green walnuts are gone!

We'll return to our regular programming soon with pretty pics of cute cows & calves but it's been a fun few days of relaxing with friends and family to celebrate a special birthday for our one of a kind country!

I was told that it would be unpatriotic to post this until after the 4th but we switched over to our stars & stripes for the duration of the weekend after Friday's nailbiter!

With "extreme heat warnings" popping up on the weather apps, it's no surprise that the cows are in full vampire mode.

Several years ago we accompanied our youngest out to Ft. Sill, OK then stopped to see friends & family in KS, NE & SD before turning east. The trip overlapped with a "heat dome" event. Just from the highway we saw many thousands of head of every hide color crowded into muddy little stock ponds or huddling under the occasional tree. I can't think of a simpler solution: "PLANT MORE TREES!" The cows will thank us.

Hard to think ahead to winter with an inbound heatwave this week but here's a money-saving idea that requires some forethought:

When we recently hosted the NRCS state grazing specialists, the expert consensus was that a new barn for our herd would cost north of a half-mil. Hard to make that pencil out even if you're selling the Golden Calf. Trees can help take the bite out of winter without taking a big bite out of profits.

For pasture-based livestock operations, trees can provide winter shelter that requires minimal maintenance and doesn’t require a tax assessment.

American barbeque is famous in its many forms but I can't think of a culture that makes locally raised meats a more central part of its culture than Argentina. This was the impromptu asado (bbq) in some friends' town when Argentina won the last World Cup. Can you imagine throwing that together in an afternoon? My mind runs wild with how they'll try to top it if Argentina repeats in the coming weeks - looking good so far!

I often wonder what percentage of US farms today eat what they grow or make the time to enjoy the fruits of their labors? I wouldn't be surprised if it's a minority - kinda sad. We feel that there is no greater benefit to farming, especially when we can share it with family and friends!
