Maybe not a perfect day, but pretty close... Fifty has been really sick for a week, with pancreas problems. She spent the last couple days at Deer Park Vet clinic on IV's. They called this morning with the good news that she was improved and ready to come home.

On the flip side, I spent all last week trying to get out to the sawmill to cut lumber for some projects we HAVE to get done before snow flies and something always got in the way... Deer Park is three hours away and collecting Fifty is kind of a two person project, but Sara volunteered to go with Lucka to get her!

So I got a long day in on the mill with some help from Billy Bob and we got a LOT of wood cut, while Lucka and Sara got home at dark with a healthy Fifty!!! A huge twofer thanks to Sara!!!!

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly....

I've always said the worst day on a horse ranch is the day you have to put down a horse, but this is a close second... One of the mares sloughed her foal and it always breaks our hearts and you always wonder if there's something you could have done... Always makes us reassess our feed and nutrition program but... it can happen for a lot of reasons with a perfectly healthy mare. I'm always struck by the perfection of the babies, even at such an early stage, guessing this one was around 8-10 weeks along..... I wish he could have seen the wildflowers come Spring.

Lucka has her ways... Here she's weaning foals and worming mares in the quietest way I've seen. Tempting the mares with oats and slipping in the wormer and sliding the foals through the gate, the mares don't know they're wormed and the foals don't know they're weaned, zero stress... and for those that know, if it will work on a contrary old rip like Flossie, it will work on anything. It's quiet down in the corrals and seems like nothings getting done and all of a sudden there's 20 foals in the weaning pen and 20 wormed mares..... My wife continues to amaze me.

So fortunate to spend a few hours with Sam and Mary, salt of the earth ranchers from Wyoming. They picked up the Sunnie Lee filly for their son and daughter in Arizona. Wish we'd had a week!

Ah, the morning after..... A day or two after the sale is Doctor Day. We have everything in and we try to get through the whole herd and do everything needs doing, preg checks, dental work, trimming, hernias and anything else. Our veterinarian extraordinaire Jake Lynch is here for the day and I'm thankful for that! Not only is he a skilled horse vet, he's so generous about explaining what he's doing and answering questions. I know we all feel like we picked up a lot of knowledge on these days. Long day, but we got a lot done, even finished in the daylight. We also had farrier Wyatt Hansen here and got a lot of trims and hoof work done. Wyatt is quiet and patient and I've really enjoyed watching him refining his craft over the years. But.. we wouldn't have made it through without Stewart and Lyndsey! There's no more horse savvy couple alive than these two, and there's a lot involved in keeping this kind of work rolling smooth and quiet. They saved us!

All and all, a productive day, perfect weather and the finest of friends working together makes for a good day, and it feels good to have it all done.
