Dear local community,

It’s been announced that there will be an executive order to suspend out-of-quote tariffs for 300,000 metric tons of imported ground beef. It will be sold at 25% below market value. The stated purpose is to address high beef prices in the US and help increase the American herd size.

We always share the importance of knowing your farmer and knowing your food. The truth is that quality of beef ranges drastically. In this situation, it hasn’t been shared what countries the beef will be coming from or what companies will be selling it.

There’s no way to verify quality of the beef. We don’t know the diets the cattle ate, the vaccines or antibiotics they received, or any step of the process.

We don’t believe this is a good decision for consumers or for American farmers and ranchers.

Customers won't know anything about the beef they purchase. Farmers’ cattle are now worth less and their income will drop over the next several months as the imported beef comes into the market.

We highly encourage everyone to find a local farm for the beef. That way you can know and trust the beef on your plate and support family farms who are up against large corporations, international markets, and high input costs.

We run on a CSA model - Community Supported Agriculture. Community is front and foremost for us. We want to know our customers and we want you to know us, trust us, and enjoy high-quality local food.

We have open Meat CSA shares and Veggie CSA subscribers can add meat to their boxes.

Thank you for being conscious consumers and supporting local farms!

Cooperatively,
The Farmers of SLO Farmers Co-op

Wisconsin Food Hub Cooperative exists because Wisconsin farms grow more good food than any single buyer relationship can absorb. The cooperative model gives farms a way to reach schools, hospitals and other larger buyers together, without each farm having to build and manage those relationships on its own. That is the piece of the story we want to spend more time on this fall.
