Its Mid-July in the upper Midwest, hot, humid, and stormy.
You might be thinking: "Will these native plants really survive if I plant them today?"

The answer is YES!

Native plants are “sun worshipers.” We’ve been fooled into believing that you can’t plant this time of year. It’s true, it’s hot and miserable for us tender humans. But it's even tougher for our local wildlife when the native plants they've relied on for thousands of years aren't in our backyards to support them.

The trick to successful native gardening is keeping new plants watered.

Here are three tips for successful summer perennial planting:
1. Soak the hole! Pour water directly into the hole before planting, drop the plant in, backfill with soil, and water deeply again.
2. Count to 20 at the base of each plant, or use a watering can to soak the roots thoroughly.
3. Water early in the morning so the plants can soak up and hydrate before the sun starts baking everything.

Here's a schedule to keep in mind unless it's raining:
Weeks 1 & 2: Water deeply every other day (or every day if it is over 90°F and/or windy)
Weeks 3 & 4: Taper off to twice a week.
Weeks 5+: Water once a week until the ground freezes.

Just a little video of all our cool native plants. Plus I'm talking a little bit if you want to hear my voice. And it's important for you to know that the native plants will not make an appearance on this Saturday's farmers market July 11th. I (Brigid) have a family event. Ross will still be there with our vegetables. Kohlrabi, peas, lettuce, cucumbers, garlic, scapes, radish, beets! Cheers!

Native plants! We got'em, and it's still a good time to plant. Especially with the rain in the forecast again. Have you seen any good caterpillar action in your gardens?
