A little look back at some of our 2025 lamb crop. 🐑💜
Every year is another opportunity to learn, make improvements, and keep working toward the kind of flock we want to build here at SCL.
It takes a lot of little decisions along the way to get where we're wanting to go, and we're excited to keep building on that.

A little throwback to August with one of our 2026 ewe lambs. 🐑💜

This girl was born in January and is out of our ram, Re-Ride.

This video was taken when she was around 7 months old. She was one that caught our eye early on, and it’s been fun watching her grow and develop throughout the year.

Still plenty of growing and maturing left to do, but we’re excited to see where this one goes.

Just happened to catch these two standing pretty good, so figured they deserved a picture. 🐑💜

These are two of our 2025 replacement ewe lambs, now getting ready to have their first lambs in January.

When we selected these girls as replacements, we were looking for things like good body, width, length, muscle and overall balance. Looking at them now, I really like the amount of body they carry, their width from behind, length of body and the shape through their hindquarters.

Both are bred to Spider-Man for their first lambs, so we’re definitely looking forward to seeing what these girls bring us in January. 👀

A couple of the girls we’re hoping will play a part in the next step of SCL. 💜

A couple of this year’s keepers. 🐑💜

These are two of our 2026 replacement ewe lambs.

We put a lot of thought into which girls we keep each year, looking at things like structure, muscle, body, length, balance and overall style.

We’re pretty excited about this year’s group and are looking forward to watching these girls develop into the next generation of our flock.

Still plenty of growing and developing left to do, but we like what we see so far. 💜

Sunday Sheep Fact! 🐑🌱

Something that’s important to remember when feeding sheep — they’re ruminants!

Sheep are designed to digest forage like grass and hay, so having access to good-quality forage is an important part of keeping them healthy and developing them properly. And yes, that includes our show lambs too!

Here at SCL, the ewes have access to pasture grass during the spring and summer, along with big round bales of brome or prairie hay depending on the time of year and where they are in the breeding cycle.

When we separate them into breeding groups or bring them into the barn for lambing, we switch to small square bales of brome. They’re a little easier to handle and help cut down on waste.

During lambing and lactation, we also add high-quality alfalfa for some extra nutrients while the ewes are working hard raising those babies.

It’s easy to focus on grain when talking about developing a show lamb, but forage and good nutrition are still a big part of the picture.

We are not the best at getting pictures around here, but here are a few from the past that represent some of the qualities we look for in our replacement ewe lambs.

The first two are 2025 replacement ewe lambs, and the last one is one of our 2026 replacement ewe lambs.

When selecting replacements, some key qualities we look for are good structure, soundness, body and rib, muscle, length, balance and overall style. We also want females that will be functional and productive as breeding ewes.

There’s a lot that goes into deciding which girls get to stay, and we’re always looking for females that can help move our flock forward. 🐑💜

Sunday Sheep Fact!

Did you know sheep wool can be used as mulch? 🐑🌱

Wool can actually be pretty useful around the garden and landscape!

When used as mulch, wool can help keep weeds down, hold moisture in the soil, and help regulate soil temperature. As it slowly breaks down, it also puts some of its natural nutrients back into the soil.

Wool is naturally made up of nutrients like nitrogen and sulfur, so it can give the soil a little boost while it decomposes.

And the best part? It gives us another use for something that might otherwise go to waste!

Just another pretty cool use for sheep that you might not have thought about. 🐑💜

A few of the girls behind the scenes at SCL. 🐑💜

These are some of our 2025 replacement ewe lambs. We kept 15 last year with the goal of not only growing our flock, but growing it in quality too.

We were really excited about this group when we selected them, and it’s been fun watching them develop into the young ewes they are today.

These girls are being bred for the first time this year, and these five happen to all be bred to Spider-Man. 👀

Now we just have to wait until January to see what these girls can bring to the program!

Introducing Spider-Man 🕷️🕸️💜

If you saw our little sneak peek Monday, here he is!

We’re really excited to have this guy at SCL. Spider Man is a Chip N’ Dale (Truce × Bullseye) × Hair Nation, and comes with some genetics we’re really excited to work with.

A big thank you to Pickinpaugh Livestock and Camp Creek Club Lambs for offering this guy this summer!

We’ve got some exciting plans already in the works for him this breeding season. Now we just have to wait and see what he puts on the ground come January! 💜
