An Update on Our Peach Crop
We wanted to provide an update regarding this year’s peach crop following the herbicide drift from a neighboring field.
After extensive research, consultation, and out of an abundance of caution, we have made the incredibly difficult decision not to harvest for sale or consume any of our peaches this year.
The herbicides involved in the drift included products containing Liberty (glufosinate), Enlist (2,4-D choline), and Round Up. Based on the available information and the EPA-approved labeling for these products, peaches that were directly contacted by the spray should not be sold or consumed. Contact herbicides cannot simply be washed off, as they can pe*****te the skin of the fruit, and residue levels may exceed legal safety limits.
This has been a heartbreaking decision, but the health and safety of our customers, family, and community will always come first.
While this year’s crop is a total loss, we are also concerned about what this means for the future of our orchard. Herbicide exposure can affect stone fruit trees beyond the current season, and we will be closely monitoring the health of our trees over the coming months and years as we learn the full extent of the damage.
We also wanted to share that we were contacted by a local Kansas City news outlet requesting an interview about this incident. For now and after careful consideration, we have respectfully declined the interview. We are unsure whether they will still run the story or not.
Our focus right now is on caring for our orchard, navigating the recovery process, and moving forward as a family. While we understand there is interest in what happened, we don’t wish to draw negative attention to anyone involved. We believe this unfortunate situation is best handled with professionalism, respect, and grace.
