The diet and living conditions of animals can significantly affect the quality of the meat and food they produce.
There’s a huge difference between TRULY pasture raised and conventionally raised chickens, including the taste and quality of the meat they produce.
The goal with the average conventionally raised chicken is to raise a high yielding chicken as cheaply possible, in a short amount of time, small amount of space, and minimal input.
Our goal when raising truly pastured chickens is to:
- Provide the chickens with a good, healthy life with little disruption to their natural behaviors, etc.
- Have a positive environmental impact by regenerating + building our soil
- Produce a high quality, nutritious meat
You’ve probably noticed chicken at the store with labels like “free range”, “organic”, and even “pasture raised”. These labels can be misleading and don’t always mean what they sound like. They’re marketing buzzwords used to attract consumers who are willing to pay a premium for these perceived higher-quality products.
But I’ll save that whole topic for another day.. 🙂 The best thing is to go directly to the source, the farmer or rancher, whoever actually raised the animals. You can have a conversation with them and ask questions instead of putting all of your trust into a label on a package.
