We did two bee removals and collected 14.25+ pounds of raw honey🍯 Some of the honey, we gave to the home owners and the honey we couldn’t save, went back to the bees. These jars contain a little bit of pollen, so we’ll keep these. But don’t worry, we still have to harvest our hives and that we will sell😋

Swarm; Today on March 18 2020, I helped a friend capture a swarm from one of his hives. This was not easy job since the swarm was on a post that is wrapped with thorney vines. It was a success and took about 2 hour to get the bees in the box.

Watching the bees foraging one these flowers is rather entertaining, they are all over them. We’ve seen them come back to the hive covered with orange pollen. Bumblebees too🐝

This has been a warm winter and the trees are budding and flowering early. The dandelion and hen bit are also in bloom and the bees are on them gathering pollen and nectar to feed the brood. It won’t be long, the weather will be warm and the bees will be wanting to swarm. This is the time to start splitting some of the hives and build new Nucs. We beekeepers are all hoping for a good year for our bees.

February in Piedmont area of North Carolina (including north areas of South Carolina)

🐝Noticeable pollen coming in under way, especially red maple, brood build-up is intensifying
🐝Check hives for honey stores, may need feeding ( syrup is needed in most cases)
🐝Check hives during good weather (on days 60+ deg), combine hives if necessary (refer to January post).
🐝For strong hives, consider adding super/hive body to allow bees room to grow, otherwise they may swarm come March.
🐝Check hives for Nosema and treat if required.

🐝 Did our first hive inspection this week. We found one hive with no queen, so we merged it with a hive that could use extra help. All the other hives are doing good and a few are strong and these will be the ones we get our honey from 🍯😋 or do some splits. They are also bringing in pollen, some of it is bright red, some greenish. Hope we have great year 🍯🍯🍯🍯 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

🐝 🐝; This is the time of the season that you need to pay close attention to your bees. Majority of the bee losses happen during cold spells, especially late winter and early spring due to the lack of food storage. Other losses are due to hive weakness and/or disease. The temperature has been fairly warm in the Carolinas, which means that bees are very active and hence will consume a lot of their food storage. Please take the time on a warm calm day, best over 60 degrees, to briefly inspect the hive to make sure that they have enough food to carry them through the rest of the winter
